I'm looking for suggestions for a distro for an IBM Thinkpad T40, which is a Pentium M (Banias) 1.3G laptop. This one has 1G ram, 20G 5400rpm hdd. The cpu is 32-bit and the video gpu is ATI. Its immediate use will be to transfer files between external usb drives so the distro must be able to see 3.0T usb drives. Given that usage, filesystem suggestions would also be in order, noting the issue with occasional filesystem corruption with EXT4. Initially those files to be transferred will be NTFS.

I've had issues with both this T40 and a similar T41 trying to install XP SP3 from a usb drive. On both they would boot and copy files, but fail on the first reboot with an error msg. Both had installs of XP previously, SP3 and SP2. One has had the hdd replaced to get from 4200rpm to 5400 rpm. Hdd's have been tested and wiped with Dban, ram has passed Memtest. Installation was attempted from a usb flash drive prepared with Rufus using a previously successful install iso. I have just read of the issue that Pentium M cpu's have with recent distros or kernels:

"Most recent versions of Linux require a processor that supports Physical Address Extension (PAE). My laptop with a Pentium M processor doesn't support PAE."

I was originally thinking of Mint XFCE, but the PAE issue might make that inappropriate. I've booted another T41 with Mint XFCE from a usb stick, but it lacked wireless drivers for an Intel wireless card, surprisingly. I've installed Vector Linux in the past but notice the most recent release is rather old. Haven't tried Puppy. Would it be appropriate in this instance?

Would I be able to get around the PAE issue with a recent distro release by using an older kernel, and if so, how would I manage that?

I am a newbie when it comes to linux. I have played around with it for a few years on different older computers that were laying around, however never really sticking to it. I just built a new computer a few months ago and decided to dual boot it. I have windows 7 and ubuntu 12 running on it now, however when i upgraded ubuntu to kernel 3.8 **** went all wrong, the system would no longer boot past grub. I can select the recovery option, however it hangs half way through. I got tired of reading forums and trying process after process that didnt work so i tried a different distro all together(opensuse, fedora and mint) None of the other distros will even boot to their live cds. I can get to the welcome screen and select what i want to do then after a few lines of code, it hangs. always in the same place.
My computer is set up for sata and the bios is on ahci setting not ide. any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello all,

I'm DEFINITELY a newb when it comes to linux. I have a machine that I don't use that currently has XP on it. I kind of want to convert it completely to linux (I don't use it for anything else, and everything on it has been backed up). I'm admittedly NOT all that computer savvy (but trying to be).

Anyways, I'm looking for a little help getting started. I started by downloading a Live CD of ubuntu 12.04. My computer doesn't want to boot it from the CD drive, so I went through the steps that it has you go through to install it inside Windows. It always ends with an error " NoneType object has no attribute 'get_info'." Googling this has led me to numerous threads and whatnot saying to try various alternative methods, but none of those have worked, and I get the same message trying a different flavor of Linux.

Can anyone help me out? Like I said, I don't even care about keeping dual boot, or running from a Live CD. I think I just want to completely get rid of Windows and only run Linux on this machine. I have another computer for work that has Windows, but I also use it for personal use, so I really don't care if this other machine is Linux only. Does anyone have a link to a good guide for making a complete switch, or just feel like helping me out? Remember, I'm a little slow, so just assume I need detailed instructions :)

Thank You!!!
