Is anyone aware of a nice free (as in $) program to recover digital photos off a camera. We didn't reformat the memory stick or anything, it just doesn't see the photos anymore (unfortunately this...

Granted I only tried out Ubuntu for a couple of days, so definitely take my comments with a grain of salt.
Here are my beefs with it:
1) Appraently it's package pool is not that of Debian so it...

My powerhouse (lol) is a PIII and KDE runs fine on it. Maybe a little slow but significatnly faster than XP would run on it. Granted fluxbox runs much, much faster but I still like KDE.

I typically run a gui-based firewall such as gaurddog or firestarter. If you install either (or have either) it's very easy to shut down all incoming and outgoing stuff.

Well, just to be different from everyone else:
Don't Slack. Don't even think about it. It will destroy your life, etc etc. end of the world......etc... you'll end up in a gutter tired and...

I'm sorry to hear about your experience , ntg85. I've had a little better luck when I first started linux but some distros do a better job at giving you a more useable desktop OS out-of-the-box than...

OS X sounds intriuging but I just don't have the $ and I don't really like being forced into specific hardware (although I do own a Playstation 2 and I guess that's not really any different). I...

Thanks for the responses all.
For the record I currently I have been using MEPIS for about the last month and have really enjoyed how litttle tweaking I've had to do. However, the lack of being...

Now that I've tried a few linux distros and been an avid linux user for over a year, I'm trying to find my ultimate distro. Here's what I'm looking for:
1) Easy to install. Nice simple gui...

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. (Since you liked SNow Crash so much). And if you're tech geeky (i.e., on this forum) you should really get a kick out of it.

It really irks me when someone like pete comes here and says something like the above suggesting he's not going to know his hardware components off the top of his head, know the many...

Hmmm..well it looks like I ran into my first major issue with MEPIS (or rather Debian).
I want to install Labplot but it needs an older version of of a lib file than the one I currently use. When...

I know this isn't software per se but what's wrong with just using the tools at mapquest.com I guess if you don't have easy internet access it would be a problem though.
Sorry I don't have a...

You mean the package manager?
AFAIK It's identical to debian. I use synaptic to run updates and install/unistall packages. It's painless and much faster than compiling from source code...

I'd been a faithful gentoo user for almost a year. Man I couldn't get away from emerge. What a great package management system. However, there are so many things I never did get working quite...

How so? i.e., why do you like it better than the rest? (I have noticed that over the last year I tend to generally agree with your opinion of things even though you're a Texan :p so I wonder why...

I typically find that I have firefox, thunderbird, and sunbird open all the time. (I guess that means I'm being productive, right?)
But the more I think about it, doesn't regular old mozilla have...

These questions have been asked countless times. Please search the forums and check out the fluxbox website. They should have everything you need to know.

Hey Knute....thanks! I'll check that out when I get home. I can certainly use that for pic pages. :)

But that's my whole point. I don't want to sit down and learn the intricacies of html code. I'd rather spend my time hiking with my wife or taking a nap out of the deck with a beer in my hand. I...

I know a lot of linux user's turn their noses up at nVu and it seems like that's because of 1) who's funding it (Lindows) and 2) you don't need to know html to use it (it's WYSIWYG).
But if you're...
