Wow. Never knew there were so many Gentoo bashers here. Somebody from a few months ago starts a thread where he talks about how much he likes Gentoo...and uses the phrase "ownz"...which is quite...

Well, odds are your new hard drive will come with a PCI Promise controller...depending on vendor. I should have stated that first. Most all of the larger Western Digital drives these days come with a...

Thats what a Xbox/PS2 is for.

Here is a interesting little page I found on the subject:
http://www.eccentrix.com/members/mammon/x86_64/
Largely based upon laptop installs, but still very applicable. To summarize:

Ahhh. You sound like you are ready to sink your teeth into something a bit more then.
I still support my previous Essential System Administration book. But, I would very much recommend:

Ever think of giving FreeBSD a try? I think a lot of the ideas that made Gentoo popular, were similar to what was already in FreeBSD. The FreeBSD ports and Gentoo's portage are quite similar....at...

DVD burner support is good. And K3b is great for burning DVDs. Heck...even my old DVD RAM (well new...but old technology) is recognized.

It's great that somebody has found a easy way for more people to use Debian. But it is worth noting that there is more than one Debian ISO image to download to use as your "boot CD" and those...

Hmmm. Wonder why it has never done it for me.

I think it is all a matter of preference. I have purchased several UNIX/Linux books over the years. And in my opinion, I have always found that UNIX books provide the greatest amount of information...

Most excellent choices. I myself would think going from Mandrake to Gentoo or Debian might be a bit of a big jump. But Slackware would be a nice migration I would think. I myself went from RedHat...

SuSe for one. But...why limit yourself? I myself am considering a jump to the Athlon 64. But, I am planning on just upgrading the various packages as needed to support the 64 (and or kernel).

I have noticed the Athlon 64s coming down in price a bit. There are some pretty reasonable motherboard combos on pricewatch that are mighty tempting.
I think a big factor in what computer you buy...

Interesting. I run Gentoo also, but I use KDE. But, rather than my monitor going into power saving mode, my screen saver comes on. However, I used to run fluxbox, and I don't recall ever having what...

All of this discussion inspired me to install 5.2.1 again! :D
As far as IP V6, I don't see that being widely deployed until IP Telephony starts to really take off. Then, the IP Address space in V4...

Yes. John is right. It is....so why would that be?
-
Shoot! I recall reading that somewhere a while back! I didn't do that. I had however, thought about it. Oh well. In the process of updating my ports-supfile right now on 4.9.

I don't know why....but for some reason in my browsing I have had pages just decide not to load since I upgraded to 5.2.1. It doesn't matter which browser I use either. I recompiled the kernel and...
-
I'm discovering that :(
What do you think of 5.2.1 BTW
-
Hehehe...knew you would be first to reply John. I usually do the same, although the last time I went and downloaded firefox, I could not get it to work on FreeBSD. I could however, get Firebird to...
-
Just curious what you folks are using out there for your browsing. I installed firefox from the ports, but it seems a little buggy on FreeBSD for some reason. No problems at all on Gentoo. I have...

I was just wondering where the heck both Doom 3 and Half Life 2 were the other day.
Already people are listing both on the vaporware top 10 list for 04. I'd really like to see a sequel...
-
LOL! Rather enjoyed that one.

And then sell those people FreeBSD CDs! :D
Heheh...they are all good distros. The best of the best.
