Stanssongs,
Welcome to JustLinux !
We are all here to enjoy Linux because the OS's inner working is in the public domain and it is up to us to learn as much as we want.

I don't think it matters as long as the area of the hard disk you are using dd on has an operational Linux which may try to update the files during the dd operation.
The dd command actually copies...

You could transfer the whole hard disk as a file into an external hard disk and copy it back into a new hard disk which replaces the old laptop hard disk.
You should mount the external hard disk...

Sabir,
Thank for the feedback.
Hope you enjoy many wonders of Linux. I think the most important bit with Linux is that knowledge is genuine that will last for a very long time. Learning...

You sound as you have done the cloning.
Actually the new clone must work exactly as the original because dd cannot change a single byte or bit in the process. As this is a new experience so I...

Welcome to Justlinux!
You don't.
Cloning the whole hard disk is the easiest and the safest way and it always works and is pretty much bomb proof. This is because the first record...

Welcome to Justlinux!
You can always re-do the cloning again say using anther disk. If the original disk has some corruptions then you may be stuck with it because the cloned copy will...

The 1241951 records of each 32256 bytes amounts to
40,060,371,456 bytes
If your hard disk has 40060403200 byte but only 40060399616 were copied then the difference of 3584 bytes may have been...

hudsonart,
Welcome to the JustLinux.
Glad you found the thread useful. I derive as much enjoyment writing it as you applying it.
To me the whole thing is so simple and the knowledge we gain...

You can tell dd the output is a file in another hard disk.
dd copies the binary data inside a partition or a disk. You get everything. The MBR is just the first sector of the a hard disk.

USB 1.1 is rated at 12 Mbit/s whereas the standard USB 2.0 runs at 480Mbit/s. The ratio is is a 40-fold increase.
I would take the laptop disks and mounted...

raptor310,
In older kernels dd always displays the prompt on completion. This is to say dd accepts the command, executes it and shows nothing if the operation is successful.
One can get some...

dd is a very simple terminal command and doesn't provide any information of its progress. The flickering light of the hard disk is all the indication that it is busy.
If you use a modern kernel...

Yes I have your view too. In Linux we can know what is going on and to me that is real knowledge.
I believe Linux is a huge collection of small...

Sabr,
Welcome to JustLinux.
This thread has been popular but superseded some what by another thread which is a lot easier and more effective.
You can raise a thread separately describing...

Sepero,
It is a possibility.
I have been using 44 partition on a Sata disk and it is about 75% full. The mobo supports 7 Sata and 1 IDE disks and so I could theoretically get 350 partitions...

XP and old MS Windows can be restored by the installation CD or just a Dod bootable floppy with fdisk.exe inside. Task B1 and B2 in the last link of my message refer. Either method works on any Dos...

jonathansmith68 ,
Thanks for letting me know any success and failure as I could improve the solution for the others.
The RAID 1 is good that it has the latest information but your current...

I think if your problem is not related to the cloning may be it is better to start a new thread as it may cause confusion to readers thinking it is related to the thread title.

Your partition table looks OK to me.
I am guessing you may just be confusing yourself.
The way I understand, based on your description, is that you want to format hda5 to Fat32 but are afraid...

Glad to see it works out for you.
I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg of many simple tasks that produce amazing results in Linux.

Yes they were typo errors and wouldn't execute.
Thanks for pointing out.
Your fdisk - look great and I am hopeful you would get through this time.
The partition ID is under the "type" in...

jonathansmith68 ,
If you look at the 2nd boxed blue area of Post #55 you will see I did not need to use "skip" because I was dd a partition hdc1.
The example you quoted is to dd the whole disk...

jl_harry12 ,
I am really surprised that you still report a problem of doing "fdisk -l".
In Post #55 there are two boxes showing two different methods of getting root privilege in Ubuntu
The...
