Maybe make /mnt/ramdisk immutable?
chattr +i /mnt/ramdisk
or, if appropriate maybe:
chattr -R +i /mnt/ramdisk

Have you mounted the hard drive? If you boot from USB the "/" should be the root of the filesystem on the USB drive.

Could be that the socket where you plug in the battery has a bad internal connection. My son had to do some soldering on his a few years ago as it was out of warranty. Be careful not to let heat...

If the screen shows a command prompt try: startx

In order to boot from the CD-ROM drive it must be listed in the BIOS boot order before the hard drive(s).

Since your goal is to install 10.4 you just try rebooting with the cd in the drive. If the BIOS is set to boot from cd then you are in business and the new installation should detect your devices....

A) Is the system able to see all your RAM?
B) Is there an issue with your video driver?

Your root privileges only apply to the shell session you opened with su. you then need to navigate to the directory in which you wish to work and use the command line.

Is the card firmly seated in the slot? Also, back in the day we sometimes used a pencil eraser to make sure the contacts were clean and oil-free before inserting them into the slot.

I think the name refers to the instruction set of the architecture. Our 32-bit chips are called i-x86 from either manufacturer and the 64-bit chips both use AMD64 instructions.
