this will not work. as i suggested earlier, Plug-in Linux disk as Primary. Windows disk will be hd1 not hd0 and Linux will NOT blow away Windows Boot Loader. Windows MBR will be intact.

Correct. MBR of Windows harddisk will be intact and both disks will bootable separately. this is the best way in Two Harddisks Dual Boot Setup imho.

in most cases, GRUB doesn't work properly if you install it in MBR of Secondary or Slave Disk OR if you install Linux in Secondary or slave disk.

i think your Chipset is not supported by Ubuntu. try Ubuntu Alternate CD. it has text based installer and you can try different parameters at boot: prompt.
