Give FreeSBIE a try...I have been using the live cd for a few weeks now and have found it to be quite good...I have not, however, tried Kanotix so I cannot compare.

I have Unreal Tournament 2004 installed and running without any apparent problems. However, I see that there are a number of patches available from the UT website..I cannot find anything...

Try Ubuntu.....it is a nice distro, Debian based and quite flexable if you want to "get under the hood".
