I think you're right about that. One bad cluster on your HD and you have a big problem. I experienced it myself a few years ago. I had a quite good backup luckily so I bought a new HD and it was ok....

I would never mess with Win8, I think my old machine won't take it and besides a lot of my software would't go with Win8.
But we have some similar problems I would say, especially the Gutenberg...

You're right about one thing Irlandes, it takes a lot of time and effort to replace one distro with a recent one! Why do you think I stuck with my old Ubuntu 10.10 for almost 5 years? Because I knew...
-
Thanks for your reply irlandes. And you're right, booting problems can always be fixed but I have to admit I was a little bit "distracted shall we say?" here and that's why I got into trouble.
Now...

Thank you Saikee for the reply.
As I said in my previous post I just went to Ubuntu 14.10, and put its Grub2 in the MBR.
But I'll keep your post for future reference because hmm...you never know!
-
Never mind. I just wiped out every Ubuntu and installed Ubuntu 14.10, and it works. Some samba issues with my WinXP desktop (surprise, surprise!) but it will be ok I think. A bit slower than Ubuntu...

Laptop Dell Inspiron 1501.
I had a dual boot on this laptop between Ubuntu 10.10 and WinXP.
Now I tried the latest Ubuntu 14.10 and by mistake put it's Grub in the MBR and since I could't get a...

Larry Webb,
You might have a point there, I'll be thinking about it.
As I said we'll all be using Grub2 in 3-4 years time and after all,it won't be that bad if they fix some of their appaling...
-
Well getting geared up to using Grub2 I first tried to make a Grub2 boot CD.
So I put in my Ubuntu 10.10 live cd and tried Saikee's method as explained in ...
-
Stumbles, I agree with you on Lilo,I never felt confortable with it. But Grub2 is really hard to use whatever configuration you are in as compared to Grub1.
And Saikee, how many private users are...
-
Which brings me back to my original question: what's the advantage of Grub2
over Grub1? For me this is not the right way to get new people to use Linux.
Within Grub2 we now have 3 files to get your...
-
Saikee,
Reading about Grub2,you are not supposed to edit the grub.cfg file. Now I did it anyway since I installed Ubuntu 10.10 which uses grub2 and made my Slax 6.1.2 kernel-panic because grub2...
-
Well, succeeded in installing Opensolaris 2009 in my second HD. I had to go in the BIOS to switch Raid Sata off because solaris doesn't have a SATA Raid driver (that's a shame, every linux I...
-
True Saikee, BSD does have it's own device names and Linux does not recognize them.
For instance my PC-BSD is da4s1a in BSD terminology and simply sdg3 in linux. Also ufs filesystem remains a big...

Just adding my little experience to this old thread.
Iomega 320GB external disk with
sdg1 Mepis
sdg2 PCLinux
sdg3 Free
sdg4 extended with a big FAT32 partition.
I tried FreeBSD...

Just a word about ndiswrapper. I have a Inspiron 1501 with winXP prof installed.
I installed Ubuntu,Suse10.2,Dreamlinux and Slax6 on this machine and worked with ndiswrapper (wireless card is a...
-
Well,I think that's exactly what Fedora and Mepis did when connected to my laptop and what PCLinux did when connected to my desktop. Although USB support is always there on the desktop and on the...
-
My conclusion for now: I got PCLinux booting with a GUI using Mandriva's xorg.conf file (they look quite the same to me but there must be some difference)
Anyway, in my configuration installing 4...
-
That's a suggestion worth trying. After all if Mandriva gets a screen why shouldn't PCLinux. I'll try to tweak PCLinux' xorg.conf a little further
-
Follow up. Well,I got some success here. First I went to the Dell forum and there seems to be a problem with the Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop recognizing external USB disks. A smart guy got a workaround...
-
Just a follow up. Right now I am in Dreamlinux on my Laptop with the external USB disk connected and when I go into a terminal and do a grub prompt he gets the geometry right:
grub> geometry (hd0)...
-
I tried all your suggestions-no luck.
When I boot from the laptop grub gives the same error 25 Disk read error.
Looks like he just cannot read the disk so it doesn't really matter what I put in...
-
Now I tried to plug the external USB drive in my laptop but it is even worse. Although every OS I have in there (WinXP,Ubuntu,Suse10.2,Dreamlinux,Slax) recognizes the USB disk as being sdb and...
-
Follow up. I installed Fedora8 in the external USB disk with the same little problem but besides that it boots allright. So it must be some problem with the USB disk configuration I think, not with...
-
That's right it is a Iomega USB 2.0 320GB external HD.
I tried to install another distro. LinuxMint,Ubuntu wouldn't install at all,Mandriva 8 installed but wouldn't boot. He got my ext disk as sdf,...
