I second slackware. It is very simple (but you have to know commands and crap) installs without too much config needed (well, compared to my first love gentoo). Within half and hour you have a full...

Most people don't realize the gentoo users like the configurability a lot not neccessarily the speed advantige. I liked the level of control I had and I like the package manager. It was up to date,...

Yes, I used knoppix and looked for it but it wasn't there. It may be because this was my second partition on the disk and I think the boot stuff is generally on the first windows partition. I used...

To be honest I don't know how I did it and it doesn't work now because it isn't active and you can't set an extended partition to be the bootable one or something like that. I don't really know what...

Well I found out the problem. The partition wasn't "active" (so fixmbr and such wouldn't do any good) and the partition I want to boot is on the extended partition (I don't know what they are called...

Hey, my mbr is screwed. So basically is there a command to boot to windows from lilo? (like slackware lilo). Like a lilo prompt command. Btw, I don't want any workarounds I just want the question...

look into supermount. It mounts and unmounts drives for you. Another alternative is submount (? I haven't used it). Also "fuser -k /dev/XXX" will kill any applications using the drive.

Hey thanks that cleared it up. Before I had it on a different channel and it didn't make a difference. But after you mentioned that I noticed that my parents put up a cordless phone right next to the...

I have a linksys wireless card running with linuxant right now and it seems to work only part of the time. I have the essid, channel, and wep set up right but it displays no connection. I tried using...

the backward compatibility is what impressed me about linux :D. Like I went to download a quake binary and it wouldn't work with glibc. So I just went to the id software ftp site and downloaded the...

In gentoo it's just an emerge libdvdcss and a quick edit of /etc/devfsd.conf (or something like that) to add a symlink to /dev/dvd. But gentoo's probably not that great of an option for your sister...

yup, it's fortune. The easiest way to get it to work is just put "fortune" (without quotes) to the end of your .bashrc (slackware does it different but the result is pretty much the same).

Here is an article about filtering sites. The method uses iptables but you might be able to get some ideas from it.
