CALLEIGH,
The best way for others to advise you on partitions is to show the geometry of your hard disks by posting the output of the terminal command (in Ubuntu)
sudo fdisk -l
When...

If you were able to do it with Pata internal disks then you should be able to repeat the same for the Sata disk, especially MS Systems make no distinction between the two.
MS Windows boot loaders...
-
May be we misunderstood you as inside an external drive the hard disk is likely 99% a Sata disk.
What you mean now is both your sda and sdb are "Internal" hard disks.
My explanation still...

But you are booting up a Linux in a USB drive with a MS Windows boot loader NTLDR.
My explanation is Xp does not allow booting from a USB drive and so that may be the reason why it can't be used...

Ciao,
I strongly advise users to use what Linux has got instead of 3rd party software.
I have compiled a write-up Booting tips at a glance and put it in my blog. It isn't finished yet but...

Or if you want to be lazy you can do what I did as follow
title empty @ hda2
root (hd0,1)
chainloader +1
title empty @ hda3
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1

Parcival,
This thread has a Grub menu showing one Grub booting 100+ systems.
I prefer to simplfy the situation this way.
(1) The stage1, stage1.5 and stage2 are internal components of Grub...

THink XiaoKJ got it summed up well.
A more recent write-up on Grub that I came across is this.
Bearing in mind the boot sector is 63x512 bytes large and Grub Manual (also "Linux in a nutshell"...
