I haven't posted here in a long time, but I was just stopping by and read this thread (I have used Mac4Lin before), and I just wanted to give you a "thumbs up" for spending the time and effort to not...

Where to start...
I certainly hope that is not the case. Any decent distro/system has its security policies and file permissions assigned according to explicitly defined...

Sounds good--I have moved to openSuse (my avatar is old), and I am looking forward to 11.0.
I guess your controls have worked before; if they haven't (in Linux), then maybe the bios is not open...
-
Here's one more: you really need to have a good reason to monkey with the permissions of executables on your system, and you need to know the repercussions of doing so as well.
I am not trying to...

You might want to check out dansguardian. I assume that it can be set up to work on a single computer.
Unfortunately, sometimes Linux does not have as many "niche" programs as other platforms,...

Seriously, I think you have made your point, okay?
Yes, OP is an experienced user that could have researched it a bit more, and probably is well aware of the "release early, release often" mantra...

Well, it took me all of five seconds to find it, in OpenSuse.
I don't really care if you use KDE4 or not; I just thought I would help you out a little, and maybe slow down your rant about a...

I don't know of the button you speak of, but in KDE4, OpenSuse, I go to the same place to see hidden files in Konqueror that I did in KDE 3.x--View, then Show Hidden Files.
KDE4 might not be...

Really can't say. I would say you probably need to make sure 8888 is the one gnump3d is using. If it is, and your router is properly configured, and your music player has the correct address (with...

It sounds like you want to stream your own mp3, etc., to your laptop, and not listen to some internet radio station. If that is the case, read on.
The answers to your questions, in order:

I hope my sarcasm was detected...

Uhhh...because I like looking at nekkid people...or maybe I'm just a perv. :p
Either way, I think you're just a little too dismissive of a man, his innovative dream, and the will to make it...

Well, your font section looks good, and I have virtually the same thing. (I have a socket-looking entry for some reason " FontPath "unix/:7100" ", and I don't have a .fonts in my home dir.
I...
-
Hmmmm...that's an odd one.
Does this happen with all fonts, or just arial? Maybe all TrueType fonts?
I would see if it applies across the board (which would point to some system issue, most...

That command is available on openSUSE. From my laptop:
laptop:/home/wayne # update-alternatives
update-alternatives: need --display, --config, --install, --remove or --auto
Debian GNU/Linux...

Well, and I am not saying this from any other regard than a simplicity one, I would uninstall the gcj version. However, I'm not sure how you got this from a "default" install, since I did a default...
-
In OpenSUSE, your plugins are probably in /usr/lib/browser-plugins. That's where mine are, anyway.
I know this is going to sound dick-ish, but I disagree. Seeing gcj leads me to believe that...

Just an idea, but this seems to indicate that konqueror is using the gnu version of java. Is it? If so, I would retry with Sun's version.
-
As bwkaz mentioned, I would guess you are getting those errors because updatedb is in /sbin, and you are trying to run it as a regular user.
Regardless, openSuse puts the javac you are looking for...
-
Uhhh, I really don't think so. Even if they were, I would assert that they do more to promote/write open source drivers than Nvidia or ATI.
Again, see above. For some info, see here:...

I thought Sun GPL'd java last year (or this year)...but I could be wrong.
Either way, if you wish to learn java, you definitely want to use Sun's implementation, if for nothing more than having a...

True. Scanner was there long before version 6.
OP: running java -version on my laptop gives
java version "1.5.0_12"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04)...

Idea for Gwenview: I believe the plugin you are referring to is part of the KIPI plugin package. Do you have any plugins in your PCLinuxOS version? That one, or perhaps all, may not have been...

I hadn't used mogrify before (just convert), and when I checked it out, its man page stated that it is similar to convert, but overwrites the original file.
Something one should know before using...
