If you use Gentoo on a P-M laptop, you really should compile and use gcc 3.4, as it has P-M specific CFLAGS. I did, and my system runs pretty nicely. I've got an IBM T40, but I think the wireless...

You could try installing any packages that have -devel in the name that look like they're related to gtk. What distro are you using, btw?
-
It's also possible to install Gentoo from an already installed distro, as long as the kernel has all the stuff that Gentoo requires. That's what I did, and it made the installation process a lot...

And that is the beauty of Linux; choice.

You don't set that variable in any file, it's a shell variable. To set a shell variable for instance, you could use this command: export VARIABLE=value. To check if it worked, use this command: echo...

Essentially the best distro for newbies is the one that your geek friend has. ;)
But if you're on your own you could try Mandrake(sorry that its not working out for you. :P), Suse(never tried it,...

I use it, and I will never go back. I'm addicted to portage. Like the person above said, it's not for noobs. If you can talk your way through the installation manual that they have on the site and...

I use two. One for everything, and the other for the GIMP(or when I don't want anyone to see what I'm doing. ;) )

I've never used Suse, but it's based on Redhat, and so is Mandrake. I would say it goes something along the lines of this:
1. Xandros
2. Mandrake
3. RedHat(now Fedora)
---Other ones---
4....

No trouble if you can still boot.
Try pointing /usr/src/linux to the folder of your new kernel.
-
Did you symlink /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux-2.6.0? Make sure you compiled HID support as a module if you want it that way. You can compile it into the kernel if you want also.
-
So what's a smart guy like you doing Dell customer support for?
-
The Evolution team is free to take any code from Thunderbird that they want, as long as they open source the result when distributing it.
-
Wow. So when do I get to play with this? I hope it's an extention of some other program so they have to open source it. ;)

CTRL + ALT + [+/-] will cycle through available resolutions. Gnome 2.4 also includes a graphical screen resolution changer.
-
I've got the same mainboard. It's got a C-Media chipset in it for the sound. If you know how to compile a kernel, then compile it in as OSS sound support(ALSA support is kinda sketchy at the moment)....

There are two files in Gentoo, one does things that you want on startup, and the other does things that you want on shutdown. /etc/conf.d/local.start starts things, and /etc/conf.d/local.stop stops...
-
Wow...umm...you should try installing Mozilla(or Firebird) from a binary provided at www.mozilla.org. Don't forget to get rid of the old one using pkgtool first.
There are plenty of threads...

Download a new kernel from www.kernel.org. We're on 2.6.0, might want to give that one a try. ;)

I have a Logitech Optical Cordless mouse. Mine is the MX700, and here is the portion of my /etc/X11/XF86Config file that deals with my mouse:
That gets it working completely, except for with...

OpenBSD and Debian Linux are both capable, however, due to the very excellent program apt-get in Debian, I would say that it is the best choice. They are both operating systems, and Debian does...

You could recompile your kernel without the msdos filesystem.

Since AMD rates their processors(instead of intel, who simply slaps the clock speed on the box), it's safe to assume that the 2600+ will be faster than the 2500+.
-
I did check a look at the cvs on sourceforge, and it looks like there hasn't been a commit in a long time. Not since 2.6.0 has been released anyhow. I guess I'll just check back every once in a...
