The memory error may be related but this could be a larger issue too with your Ram. I would attempt removing each chip one at a time then and running memtest again untill you discover which chip...

I could be mistaken but I believe that the ubuntu CD is a live cd. if so that should do the trick

how big is your external HD? if you created a Linux partition in some free space you may be able to recover your data if it is on it's own partition

then reinstall xfonts-scalable then attempt the upgrade again

it looks like OO depends xfonts-scalable and this is why your getting the error when removing the package
the first thing I would do is fix any broken packages using synaptic the fix...
