I think you have to
chmod 666 /media/cdrom0
In Sarge, the disc drives are under /media/. Change 0 to whatever number your drive is. It's 0 if it's your first drive, 1 if it's your second...

Yeah, but you could use one of those floppy disk boot managers that allows you to boot from USB.

Yeah it plays all the AVI files just fine. Is there a way to convert WMV to AVI? I don't know if it works with other WMVs, could you send me an example that you know works so I can try it?

I installed the w32codecs, uninstalled then reinstalled mplayer, changed the permissions on /usr/ilb/win32, I go to play my wmv file and I get this
Any help? It recognized the codecs, but...

When I try to open zip files I get an error saying "The utility zip is not in your PATH" How do I fix this?

After I put the codecs in /usr/lib/win32, do I need to uninstall then reinstall totem? Also, how do I change the permissions of the codecs?

I've got some .wmv video files I want to play. Totem says I need a "MS WMV 9" codec. mplayer only plays the audio. Wheredo I get the appropriate codec?

I suggest SLAX Frodo edition. It's only around 40-50MB. It doesn't have X, and it can be installed on a usb pen drive. There's no need for a HD or a CDROM drive.
