Hi guys. I'm back.
The question I'm about to post isn't centered on Linux alone. It is a general network problem I've been facing for the past few days.
I moved to a new university a couple of...

Okay, so I got myself this new notebook sometime back. It's got a 320 GB hard disk, with a partition table that (as of now) looks like this:
Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255...

I faced this problem on Ubuntu as well... using Epiphany solved it.

Welcome back, Parcival.
Why not issue this:
cat /dev/zero > tempfile && rm tempfileThe file, tempfile, needs to be created in the partition that you wish to back up. This will fill up the...

Has bb_j read this yet? :p
Oh, and by the way, I ain't too fond of KDE 4.x either.

I do not see any of the cards you mentioned in your post in the ALSA compatibility lists... (Diamond Multimedia, Turtle Beach). The compatiliblity list for Turtle Beach does include a few cards under...

Can't help you with that, I'm afraid.
I would like to re-iterate here that if it's online radio streams that you're after, you'll probably be a lot better off with tools like Streamripper...

That's okay.
That isn't okay at all... especially the lines in red. The point is that a Jack server must be up and running for Audacity to find. In your case, something's keeping the sound device...

I tried replicating your problem on my machine. Everything works perfectly with both playback & recording devices set to JACK Audio Connection Kit: system.
I was probably wrong there!

The following playback devices work on my setup (it utilizes a Realtek ALC888 chip):
OSS: /dev/dsp
ALSA: HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,0)
ALSA: front
ALSA: surround40
ALSA: surround51
ALSA:...

Try setting both playback & recording devices to ALSA: HDA NVidia: AD198x Analog (hw: 0,0).
You could also try combinations of ALSA: HDA NVidia: AD198x Analog (hw: x,y) [and not ALSA: HDA NVidia:...

Have you set up your playback & recording devices correctly? By default, Audacity sets both to OSS: /dev/dsp.
You can change it by clicking on Edit | Preferences | Audio I/O.

Does the waveform indicator show you waveforms? Or is it a flatline? I'm suspecting Audacity isn't being able to capture your audio at all... all that's getting captured is silence.
Are you...

Try using Audacity.
$ sudo aptitude install audacity

Shamelessly pulled off the CD-R FAQ by Andy McFadden (with *slight* edits...)
Hope this helps.

Using Linux, of course!
However, my dad's more accustomed to using Windows XP, so I'll probably need to set up a dual-boot system.

Hi guys.
I have this old desktop machine lying around. It's powered by an Intel Pentium 4 (2.0A GHz, Northwood, Socket 478). The mobo on the machine is an Asus P4BGL-MX/533 (i845GL, ICH4,...

I don't know whether this is a very good question to post on this topic, but: when I first came here, I saw a lot of posts by forum elders like dkeav, Parcival and DavidMD. Where have these guys...

This is not necessarily true. A Samsung 40 GB ATA hard disk on one of my machines (Pango PL40/SP0411N, circa 2003) is still going fine, while a newer Seagate 200 GB ATA hard disk connected to the...

@Glennzo
You bring new light to this topic.
While browsing the Internet last night, I came across this page. Co-incidence? After reading your post, I'm not so sure.
(edit) Thanks a ton for the...

Back-to-back optical drive and hard disk problems? Sheesh.
Palimpsest appears to be warning you of an impending data disaster, based on information provided by the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring...

While I do not have an answer to your primary problem, I tried duplicating your problem on my machine (runs Ubuntu 8.10 without any updates). It appears that your optical drive won't show up in wodim...
