Hi, I'm super late replying to this (haven't logged in in nearly 8 years!) but this stuck out for me.
You'll find Debian PPC is definitely still alive and officially supported:

Unfortunately that's not the problem. For example, say I'm trying to play Roy Harris' 3rd Symphony, which I ripped to OGG format from my CD.
The whole symphony is one long continuous performance,...

I've so nearly fixed this, but not quite...
I downloaded and installed a Debian package for rythymbox, but from the "unstable" branch this time (all the dependencies seemed to be met easily using...

Blimey, I'm up against it today...
OK, I'm looking for a gapless audio player I can use with Debian. I have a mixture of OGGs, MP3s ands FLACs. I quite like the interface of Rhythymbox (the...

Hi again,
wasn't sure whether this deserves to be in hardware/software or PPC. I went for hardware in the end...
I have an original Mac Mini. That means it's a PPC architecture with a G4...

PS Debian (PPC at least) definitely uses the bcm43xx by default still. I remember reading the errors in dmesg from bcm34xx complaining that it didn't have the firmware (solved by installing...

Hmm, well it appears to be working, although I'm not sure exactly why.
I tried again to connect using the network-manager-gnome, except this time I chose to specify the encryption method (TKIP)...

Hi,
I'm using Debian testing (lenny) and I've just made a complete re-install after upgrading the RAM and hard-drive in my G4 Mac Mini (ie the old PPC-architecture version).
I did a net-install...

I had to learn HP-UX in order to complete my engineering course and so I was exposed to UNIX in the days before I had my own computer.
When I finally got my own computer (after university, once I...

"sed is not clairvoyant"! How true...
I have two lines of enquiry now:
1) do what nabetse said and concentrate on stripping out all the cruft ( "Smith, John S" and <>).
2) try and...

Hi people,
long time no log-in. Any ideas on this?:
I have a long list of e-mail addresses which I want to use for a mass-subscription to a Mailman mailing list. Don't worry, I'm not spamming...

try creating an empty file?:
touch /var/spool/mail/morawski

Well there's still a problem with the "cat" method of combining OGG files:
The above method works perfectly using the CLI command ogg123 to play the one big OGG file. There are no gaps between...

OH MY GOD.
I am stupid. I just hadn't got the syntax of cat right:
cat track01.ogg >> mixcd.ogg
cat track02.ogg >> mixcd.ogg
...and so on, actually works, AND it preserves the separate...

Recently I splashed out on an iRiver H340 music player. Which means my little computer has been constantly ripping my CDs to OGG format for the last three weeks. However I have noticed two problems....

Maybe you created a FAT partition, but didn't create a FAT *filesystem* (to do this you would use mkdosfs under linux). parted or qtparted on their own wouldn't give you a FAT filesystem.
Maybe...

Forgot to post the links to the Debian downloads:

First, you don't use ISO images for floppies. And you don't "burn" floppies either, unless you do it with a lighter :-) You either
(a) mount a floppy, then browse / copy / move files around the...

Easiest way would be to "make a persistent home directory" - you can find it in the Knoppix KDE menu.
It lets you use a floppy or maybe a USB stick to store your /home directory on.

Yeah, not far off, actually... I spent many months as a SuSE user because I didn't have the time to sort out my Debian (potato!) install.
In fact, the first set of CDs I got were very dodgy,...

The engineering department at my university made me use:
HP-UX running on thin terminals arranged in clusters;

I see.
It'd be lovely to just burn the movie, and bin the extras, BUT the whole point is that I want the Swedish subtitles - and be able to turn them off totally when I've mastered the language :)...

I'm trying to make a direct copy of a movie DVD, using k3b. When I choose Tools --> Copy DVD, it gives me a message saying something about "video transcoding" not being available yet, but I'll be OK...

Yup, if you right-click on the partition's desktop icon, there's a menu item for changing to read-write mode.
It's definitely buried in a sub-menu, something like "actions". Just try everything...
