I just want to make sure I understand the BSD license, correctly.
1. If I were to build a piece of software on, say, OpenBSD, would I have to open-source it? Even if I used gcc and the libraries...

Linux will run on most Macs with a processor newer than the Motorola 68000. This means the original SE won't work. If yours is one of the remakes with the 020 or 030 processor, though, you can.

Really, the issue with cgi-bins is whether or not they can upload or change their programs. If they can change them, you'd better make sure you can trust them. They could try to install programs...

If you have a floppy drive, any distro should work. Just do a:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
(You might have to format the floppy, first.) Then, you can write anything you want to the floppy.

Each .iso file must be written to a different cd. That gives you your installation discs. (An .iso is a bit-for-bit copy of a disc. In this case, it just happens to be a copy of Mandrake...

You know, you could use a capital "L", then you didn't need the "oad".
Probably saved a tenth of a second, every time!
(Yes, I learned on a C64, too.)

My apologies for the long delay. A new job, plus upgrading to Panther... Where does the time go?
I'll have to look into that one. I was running the program in a Windows emulator, but...

Basically, I'm looking for a program similar to the one available at http://www.carlsondesign.com/#Fun_Shareware . For a year or two, I've wanted to build a small sailboat. I'm ready to try it, but...

I like Zile. It's like emacs, but a fraction of the size. It comes with Damn Small Linux, in fact!
Personally, I like the command syntax of emacs, but not the bloat. That's where Zile comes in...

Okay, what programs are you looking at, here? The source code isn't released for everything, but it is for a fair amount of stuff. Apple's site has quite a bit (including the built in chess game). ...

Are we talking pre-os X software? If so, then I'm not familiar with one.
Anything that runs on X or higher should, theoretically, work with Linux (if compiled for it, of course). Again, though,...

Well, I don't know specifically, but I can tell you on a more general level...
Basically, everything you need for a base system is on the first disc. The rest of it is filled with the most...

You're looking for "quota". It SHOULD be on RH (It even comes on OS X.).
I've never used it, myself, but the man page for it seems pretty clear, and it should point you in the right direction!

Everything's lookin' good in Safari 1.1!
Gotta agree with hard candy, though... :D

Well, the best place to go to learn that is www.linux.org . Here's the short version.
Linux is an operating system. It does, essentially, everything that Windows does. It gives your programs a...

Well, here's the project I'm currently working on. It converts text into html, using my very own markup language! For example:
_b ... _b makes text bold.
_i ... _i makes it italic.
A line-feed...

No problem! It kinda confused me when I first heard it, too.

Basically, here's the problem. Okay, in a computer any number is expressed in binary, a system based on powers of 2. So:
17 = 10001 in binary
That's pretty easy. Now, for non-integers, it gets...

I'm reading about it, now, and it looks awesome! I'll have to try it out, later...

Okay, so if something like /var filled up, logs would just stop expanding?
And on a computer without X, /tmp wouldn't make a big difference?
Well, that's comforting! This was mostly a question...
-
No other way springs to mind... I've got another question, though.
How do you get around the problem of floating-point precision? As the program runs, it'll be calculating smaller and smaller...
-
Okay, I've been looking around for a couple hours, now, and I'm stumped!
Let's take a hypothetical situation, here. Okay, you've got a /var partition, which is getting closer and closer to full...

What distribution is it? Though there are some general things you can do, it helps to know what distro you're using.
As for general stuff...
1. A server doesn't need a GUI. Don't give it...

Well, I've got a 486 that I'm using to write a novel. With vi and a tiny installation of Slackware, I'm only using a fifth of it's 500 MB hard drive. PLUS, it can boot faster than any Windows...

I think he means the drives that just have a slot for the cd (instead of having a tray that you put the disc on, which then retracts into the drive).
I'm rather curious about that, myself...
