You can do it by editing /etc/passwd
look for a line like
user:x:500:500:Full Name:/home/user:/bin/bash
and replace the 500's with 0's
Before you do this though, think long and hard...

I have access through the College LAN and HEANET.
The LAN has a fibre-optic backbone and we get a 40MBps connection to the Internet through HEANET :)
Unfortunately I don't get to use all that...
