Man, have I ever been out of the loop
Is JohnT still around? MrBen? Bkwaz?
Drifted away from Linux for a while when I went to Mac and got lazy (btw it's a POS). However I got all GEEKY...

I know this thread is old, but I just have to post here because yesterday I thought of Mike and how sad I was to hear that he'd passed on. He was such a great help to everyone on this board back in...

I tried setting this up as a PTP device, and even though it was recognized and and gtkam found the camera, I was still unable to view any pics. As a last resort, I tried setting the camera up as a...

Yes, I have to agree whole heartedly. During rough times, and I've had MANY, about the only thing I took consolation in was my achievement of getting a degree (mechanical engineering).
Sad to say...

This is very true under certain circumstance. The local cable company (which offers cable TV and cable modem internet service) only pays their staff $8/hr. How much "expertise" can you get for...

Thanks everybody for the help. I won't be able to tinker with that for a few days, but I will report back and let everyone know if I had success.

Thanks, I tried that  --- thing is, I'm confused about what script to do the changes in...there seems to be so many of the same thing (in my ~/ and /usr/share)

I have a feeling you need either the pcl or hijs type drivers with that Deskjet (I had old DJ 400 and needed pcl).
My advice is to try apsfilter to install the printer. Just do apt-get install...

Why do you want to install that release? It's outdated now and as you say, the updater doesn't work anymore (not that it worked that well when it did...)
If you want a distro that's easily...

OOPS...sorry, I didn't read about the cdrom debacle (advanced age...:D)
Anyway, you may like to use zipslack as that's very small and requires no disk.
Are you able to network another computer?...

All the *boxes are good, but you might like to try Waimea. I think active development stopped on this one, but it's apt-get-table. I also have the source code on my ftp site.

Try Gnomemeeting for NetMeeting.

This is probably the problem. I had the same thing happen because I forgot to save resolv.conf after network setup. DUHHHH

Hard choice, but I'd have to say Debian.
Just like the "feel" of it and that it has no intention of going "corporate"

Yup, exactly what I had to do (have Verizon). However, on that machine that I used, I had shrunk down the Win partition to the barest minimum, and needless to say, it was a joy to get the dialog box...

To aid you, swap should be roughly twice your RAM. Bear in mind that /usr will have all your apps, so use some judgement here.
As far as / , a lot of people use about 50-100 meg, and some'll tell...

I'm a weather NUT, and knew nothing about these. Thanks John, for the heads up & the instructions--easily tailorable to any distro...just know your directory structure folks.
