This is EXACTLY the kind of killer game Linux needs. I don't understand why there's been so little progress over the last three years. Maybe they should GPL v3 it and find some way to make money...

It's merged into the tree, that makes it part of the kernel. So you're completely wrong.
There is absolutely no need for different SMP and non-SMP kernels as there was with 2.4, which is the point...

Corporate customers need someone to call and yell at. If they can't blame Micro$haft or Red Hat, someone loses their job, and responsibility for bad decision might even *gasp* move up the chain to a...

Gerd's SMP alternatives patch was merged in 2.6.17.
-
I forget when the change was made exactly, but all current 2.6 kernels are SMP enabled and run on single core CPU without any kernel parms.
-
edit by admin: ad blocking, and advising others how to do so, is a bannable offense here.

Moving to 2.6 would cause the least problems, as you no longer have to worry about SMP or non-SMP kernels. But if you have to stick with 2.4 then I guess you'll also have to stick with a non-SMP...

Just to clarify, thought it seems benign to buy music for $1 a song, think where the money is really going. A portion of it goes to people who are spying on your internet usage. Another piece goes to...

And if you like it, make a donation straight to the artist. No need for the anti-competitive music industry oligopoly to take 90% of the profit. Plus you'll never have to worry about Nazis kicking in...

Of course, you could also download free music in a free format like ogg.

When logging in the roaming profile will always overwrite the local profile. Only when logging out does the local profile overwrite the one stored on the network. That's by design and what you're...

Well, on a departmental level, I think a lot of big wigs are afraid of MIS/IS/IT these days. They don't want too much power/authority concentrated in any one place. And in all fairness, there are...

Nexuiz 2.3 is now in the Fedora 7 extras repo, including a 64-bit package. Just do a "yum install nexuiz" and you're ready to start blasting.

Yeah, certs are for getting past HR, not for impressing other techies. When there were more jobs than candidates (pre-2000 bubble burst) I didn't have any certs and my phone was constantly ringing....

I use virtualization to run full-blown Windows under Linux now, but as I recall there was a bin directory under my home that had links to all the apps. Could be the wine-tools package that set all...

Though you said works in another PC, still sounds like video card memory to me. Maybe it only flakes out above a certain temp and one case has better cooling than the other.

His handle is a familiar one, even to an infrequent poster like me.
Nice place you have here BTW...

This chart brought a tear to eye. :( Having come from a VMS and CP/M background myself, the transition to UNIX/Linux has been somewhat traumatic for me. Just wanted to point out that TRS-DOS, the OS...

Small cube cases are real popular right now. All the mini-ITX ones I've seen use wimpy VIA C3 CPUs though. :( There are some mini-ATX ones that use higher performance chipsets and CPUs however....

Linux developers should focus on making better products instead of similar and compatible products. Microsofties would then be demanding Visio be able to open Dia files.... or they might just switch...

Wonder what ever happend to VRML, used to work with it a bit in the mid-90's. Anyway, a 3D desktop will still function with apps that present information in 2D form. It'll just eliminate the need for...

Another option for a vendor-specific Linux cert is Novell's CLE. They list LPI Level 1 as a prerequisite in their 5 day course overview. The course costs $2000 though and if you're not already a CNE...
