my personal suggestion would be Mepis.
Reasons?
1) very nice automatic hardware detection, worked the best on my laptop compared to other linux distros i had tried.
2) LiveCD. Awesome sandbox...

couple things I can think of to try
-try a live distro such as Mepis or Knoppix see if you have the same prob
-try a non-smp kernel, maybe a stock kernel first.
