What's all this about SCO and intellectual property?
Can somebody tell me what that's all about? I would think that any "UNIX" left in ANY of my distros has been rewritten a hundred times by a hundred different people. Are they (SCO) just fishing? Is there a threat? I mean, even if some UNIX things have to be taken out of, say, red hat, it won't be long until alternative code is written, right?

I can't see it affecting anyone but it would be nice to know what evil plans they're hatching

#£¤&}"¤/ SCO!
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=...0450221&tid=17
Has anybody read this letter from Eric raymond on newsforge? The piglets of SCO are suing IBM for a multibillion amount worth of claimed damages concerning Unix IP, which was given away free in the first place!
I would suggest the following:
1/ Erase anything SCO related on your machines.
2/ Each and every person reading this, send an angry email to SuSE/united linux. If they're not willing to alienate SCO, they deserve utter oblivion, and for their prescence to be blasted off the net. (who wants to buy an insecure product?) If unitedlinux doesn't do the right thing, i think it will be safe to say that we have a new Micro$oft in the house!
3/ Convert users of SCO or unitedlinux to other Distro's.
I wonder what SuSE's stance is on this. If they're not careful, this could make them look really bad.

Hmmm.........SCO do seem to have lost their marbles over this. Even if they do succeed in sueing loads of companies, no one will want to do business with them again.
Although, i found it quite amusing that IBM is one of the largest holders of IP........just imagine what they might to SCO if they win a few billion
Seriously though, it's not a good state of affairs..........at least linux itself seems to be outside of what they are doing

SCO SUCKS !!!
I am not surprised one bit. I thought that Ransom Love was the biggest tit in the Unix community but sadly SCO appears to have the undisputable Intellectual Property rights on their monopoly on raging idiocy.
They have not even ruled out sueing Linux Distros such as Suse over IP infringements. When the possibility of sueing one of your business partners (United Linux) I think it is safe to say that the company is on it's last legs.
I wonder what Suse's response to SCO's comments are and whether they regret getting in bed with Caldera to create UL.
I would think so and I hope that IBM crushes SCO into Chapter 11 !!
GO IBM

hear, hear. Bunch of dumb bastards.
And they ARE threatening Linux. Did you read all that "bicycle vs. luxury car" business? That's ridiculous crap. If they try to lock it up, the Linux community should file a class-action counter-suit on behalf of every Linux user on the planet. Pay us each $100. How many billions would that be? That'll give 'em a double-take.
I hope they lose this lawsuit in a big way. And if they have so much right to lock up all the code, why haven't they done it earlier? Why wait so long? OS/2 was a big enough deal that if they were gonna do it, they should've done it a long time ago.

Red Hat has already lost 6% of their stock over this crap. Linux is going to take a huge hit over this because 1000's of fickle business people are going to think twice about switching over now. If not ever they are all waiting now to see what happens. Just think of the hit the all ready hurting Mandrake is going to take.
SCO is going under and nothing is going to stop that.
What if Microsoft paid them, lets say, 10 million dollars to start this. Microsoft knows it would make them look bad if they attacked Linux directly. Why not use a company that is already doomed to do the dirty work for them? Would you put this past them? Would you put it past Apple? I wouldn't.

I think this is all dumb. You don't go head-to-head against the largest holder of U.S. patents and largest computer company.
But yes, like someone else mentioned, SCO seems to be on its last leg.
-
argh, I was gonna say this SHOULDN'T affect linux at all, but they have ownership of the general binary form (ELF), so that has the potential to screw basically anything *nix based.
-
Well, the way I read it, they have ownership of COFF, not ELF.
But they're claiming that ELF is a derivative format, which might (MAYBE) screw everybody. I kinda doubt it, but if they get a dumb judge, who knows? Ideally, IBM's lawyers are better than that, but you never know.

Some good fuel for this fire
SuSE is considering breaking off of the UL because of this. How would you feel if your business partners started attacking your mentor?
And calandra? Ever look that up in the dictionary?
cal·de·ra ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kl-dâr, -dîr, käl-)
