While I believe that a minimalistic approach could work on an 80286, an 08186 or 08086 in just plain fantasy.

As for the supposed "pre-x86", that would be the 8080 microprocessor developed by Intel prior to the 8086. Before that there was the 8008. Personally I would love to see someone get GNU/Linux running on a 4004. It was Intel's first microprocessor and it ran at 108KHz (yes that's a K).

I heard there's a version of the Linux kernel that is being ported to work on 8086 XT-style machines. I don't know exactly how many tools you could reasonably install on those, though. (My IBM PC-XT has a 10MB hard drive!)

But seriously, folks. Let's keep this discussion nice and friendly now. And to Citadel: El_Cu_Guy knows his facts. Not only that, he knows his facts and can use them in a debate without having to resort to insults. If you can't back up what you say with hard facts, you'll deserve the thrashing you'll get (Notice he still doesn't resort to insults when he drops a truckload of knowledge on you?)

Bottom line: A discussion of opinion is perfectly fine, even if it gets a little heated. But if there's any more ugliness from anyone, a-closin' this thread's a-goin'.

108Khz? Is that even enough power to run an old gameboy?

BTW: Why hasn't any of the mods closed this thread yet? I mean, haven't we had enough senseless rambling for one thread?

    What is FUD

Hi, I was reading through this thread and found some terms which I don't really understand..what is FUD?
RedHat RedHat, seperate the Red and the Hat. Toss it around and you get HatRed. Guess it's hatred for MS?

Actually, it means fear, uncertainty, and doubt. When people talk about this in relation to SCO they're usually talking about it's broad, all-encompassing, and usually vague statements. These statements are specially crafted to cause panic and sway public opinion.

For example, SCO's claim that "Linux" is based on proprietary Unix code. It's really vague. It doesn't say whether the code is in the Linux kernel or in the GNU/Linux OS. And they don't cite a single example or hard fact to back up their claims. That's FUD. Their goal is to get people to migrate off of Linux thinking the sky is going to come crashing down.

Actually the SCO complaint does state that the UNIX code is in the kernel. But it does not specify which kernel or what the code is.

Like earlier posted, the objective is to scare "Corporate Linux" users away from linux.

you're right. They did say it was in kernel. I guess my brain just stopped working. It's like that sometimes. That still doesn't change the fact that SCO is being very ominous about the whole thing and has cited few (if any) hard facts to back up their allegations. Personally, I think that their case doesn't hold water and they know it. They're just drawing the battle lines between proprietary and open source. That's just my uninformed opinion, though.

FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.

It is a marketing technique used when a competitor launches a product that is both better than yours and costs less, i.e. your product is no longer competitive. Unable to respond with hard facts, scare-mongering is used via 'gossip channels' to cast a shadow of doubt over the competitors offerings and make people think twice before using it.

In general it is used by companies with a large market share, and the overall message is 'Hey, it could be risky going down that road, stick with us and you are with the crowd. Our next soon-to-be-released version will be better than that anyway'.

In the computer world, FUD was first practiced on a large scale by IBM in the 1970's. Many people cite Amdahl as coining the phrase when he left IBM to start his own company thus making himself a FUD target.

now i'll keep this brief since i just blew out my elbow and my loose the ability to use my right arm and it will take a while to become left-handed

i believe that noy only should we not hate Sun but support them. sadly quality projects take vision and i don't think oss can handle that. you need one mad genius to come up with an idea and then people to code their vision, noy just what they feel like. plus sun seems (from reading interviews with key staff eg. Gosling(?) ) they seem to be passionate about their products and interested in making good in computer science. i believe they see Solaris as not just product but art. i don't really see innovation happening in the osss arena. most of the features are that linux can do what other oses can but cheaper and with more customizability. but i can't imagine oses innnovating something like Java or Visual Basic Studio (face it M$ aside its a great RAD tool second to none). also there is a tendency not too polish things, but just get them working. like how hard would it be to make an app to edit the paths with drop down boxes? no there is definitely room in the software world for propriety software as long as the software is open stadards then its far game i'd say. if i could afford a G5 osx panther (apparently the freebsd-ness is being expanded) because there is the x11 compliance and posix (i'm pretty sure osx is). so lets rest the proprietary and work together.

geez pretty long rant for one hand

extortion, plain and simple, SCO just wants to be the next Microsoft, so it's playing the "Intellectual Property" bit to squeeze money out of the scared little IT departments. I just cringe every time i hear "Intellectual Property", it's just another buzzword for "me thought of it, that makes it mine, no way another human can use it without ME saying so!"
As far as your concerned, I'm a 45 year old virgin chinaman that lives in his mom's basement, let's keep it that way, eh?
