    SSH over internet?

I would like to be able to have putty on my computer at work and ssh into my computer at home. I have cable internet with a router at both places.

So on my router at home, I set up port forwarding to the IP address of my computer (192.168.1.101) and when I get to work I'll put the IP address of my router into putty and I should be able to log into my machine?

If this is right there is a snag somewhere along the way. Any ideas of what it could be?

Just to be sure when you run putty are you putting a dot in "SSH", and not leaving it as the default of telnet?

Do you have another computer on your LAN that you can try to use putty, or SSH and try to connect to the computer that is running the server? That way you know the server is accepting connections and working.

Yep I double checked the dot

I ssh into my desktop with my zaurus all the time so I'm pretty sure it's working but I'll double check when I get home.

It works fine now. I had the port forwarding set up to the wrong IP address.

Now I can use linux even on my windows machine at work

Now that you have ssh working, you should check into cygwin for your windows PC...it is a linux shell that runs in windows, and even supports X-windows, so you can run x-windows apps on your home PC, and have the display on your windows box.

You can do the same thing using X-Win32, but I like cygwin better.
