No sound in Enemey Territory
Well im not sure what the problem is. Im running Slackware 9.1. Other apps like xmms work fine but the sound dosent seem to work in ET.
------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp
------------------------------------
-
Did you check if /dev/dsp was there? this is created by a kernel option which if is not there needs to be added in by making a new kernel with the support
-
I think it is.
josh@PhantomAMD:~$ file /dev/dsp
/dev/dsp: symbolic link to dsp0
josh@PhantomAMD:~$
-
What are the permissions on /dev/dsp or dsp0 ? Also, are you using OSS or Alsa? If you are using alsa, you can change it in the config file...
-
I have had problems with sound in games and xmms would work perfectly. I found that by killing arts, sound returned to my games. You could try that. My setup is Fedora Core 1, running the latest kernel (2.4.24.1.2174.nptl or something like that), KDE 3.2 and alsa 1.02. Hope this helps out.

same problem
i'm having this same problem with wolfenstein ET, after installing alsa. how do check the permissions on /dev/dsp, ph34r?
-
Whoops forgot about this thread
OK:
-im using OSS drivers
- im in gnome so I dont think arts in running
bash-2.05b$ ls -l /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Mar 3 14:44 /dev/dsp -> dsp0
bash-2.05b$ ls -l /dev/dsp0
crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 3 Aug 29 2003 /dev/dsp0
-
um...
bash-2.05b$ ls -l /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Mar 3 14:44 /dev/dsp -> dsp0
bash-2.05b$ ls -l /dev/dsp0
crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 3 Aug 29 2003 /dev/dsp0
could you explain this, please? why is there a date in the middle of the link?
-
I dont know. Im not sure how to list permissions.
-
?
ok, you obviously sim-linked here. did you type the date in the middle of those sim-links?
-
doh!
nevermind, my brain is dead. sorry, lol
-
permissions
ok, with the ls -l /dev/dsp command, i get this:
crw------- 1 jeff root 14, 3 Sep 15 09:40 /dev/dsp
is this the problem? why i don't have sound in wolf ET using alsa?
-
Q: What model is the sound card?
If it's old enough you will only be able to do one thing at a time and if esd or arts is taking up the card, then ingame sound won't work.
-
In other words, if you run Gnome, then ESD may be your problem instead of Arts.
Zubir -- if your username is jeff, then your problem is not permissions.
-
?
um, what is "if your username is jeff..." supposed to mean?
