You wouldn't want to delete those journal files since you are using the ext3 journaling filesystem.

Are you sure the journals are the ones taking up all the space? Have a look around the filesystem for core dumps etc. or other large files. You can probably use 'find' with specific options that can search for files that are greater than a certain filesize.

You could pipe to results of find to 'rm -i'. I would suggest '-i' for interactive mode instead of blindly deleting all core files.

Have you run 'top' to see if any processes are hogging the system? Any changes made just before this started to happen?

It could be due to the root filesystem being 95% full.

during the boot process, I saw that too. BUT I have already touch the "SWAP" in the directory ( scratch) that the system wants.

During booting the message:

/scratch/SWAP invalid argument.

What and how I do something about this?

What you'd want to do with /scratch is actually mount it as swap space, not as a regular filesystem. First, type

mkswap /dev/hda10

then, add this line to your /etc/fstab and remove the other line for /scratch or /dev/hda10 or whatever was there before:

/dev/hda10	swap	swap	defaults	0 0

that could possibly speed up your system...
