suse 10 nvidia not working

I used yast online update to install the nvidia drivers.
When i tried to log in again the whole screen was just black--the display just wouldnt work. I tried leaving it onfor a while --i went out for a few hours came back and still no display.

Should i just go back to using whatever i had in the first place?
is there an easy way to do this?

I haven't had this specific problem, however, I have (so far) had good success with downloading and installing nvidia's drivers directly from their site according to their instructions.

is there a way i can revert to the default video card drivers that were installed with SUSE?

well figured out how to revert--just replaced nvidia with nv in the xF86Config file.
wonder why it didnt work...my card is a GeForce 440 mx 64. Which is i guess a few years old now, have the drivers surpassed this card?

no the drivers support the card just fine, perhaps you need to grab the official drivers and install them properly, instead of using yast's precompiled modules

In addition to using the install file from Nvidia, you should also read the README on the Nvidia site. Depending on what X-Server you are using, you will need to comment out some lines and add a few. For example, GLX should be loaded to take advantage of the nvidia driver.

I have the same problem (haven't checked the nvidia site yet).
Additionally, I noticed that my keyboard hang after logging in, mouse was still functioning.

What I find odd is that KDM is functioning (or GDM for that matter), they also use X, right?

Well... followed the nvidia readme which basically says that you should use YOU for driver installation. Everything installed just fine, but my card (N6600LE) is still recognized as a VESA card... Setting this manually to 'nv' crashes X

Go to control center-yast2 modules-hardware-graphics card and pick your card from list. You can also set 3d acceration on at this time. I know your card is there because we have similar cards.

Nop, it really isn't. I have the option to change some VESA options (3 to be precice), that is it. I can change my monitor, but that is not what I want.

Afterwards, I reinvoked the NVidia script (somewhere in /usr/...) and the script reported that there was already an nvidia driver installed and whether I would like to deinstal the first one and install the new one. Version numbers were the same, so I reinstalled.

Started SaX, but again only a VESA option.

Started SaX with the '-m 0-nv' option. Some lines on NVidia printed on the console, but still no go. SaX still only sees VESA, but my option list has grown (I know have about 10 options)! My monitor resolution is screwed up now, that is the downside...

Since you have almost the same card, could you post your xorg.conf?
