    Transparancy, and whatever in Eterm/Escreen.

Get the impression I am not the only one who cannot make Eterm - in this case inside Enlightenment - open, when X starts, as I would wish. Especially if transparency is involved the programs seems to go slightly mad and put up multiple windows and so on.

This is a how I didn't do it.

Gave up and just let an Eterm start when X starts. Then typed 'es', where es is the function:
    Code:
    es () { ! Eterm -t Escreen --scrollbar 0 --buttonbar 0 --trans --shade 55 --geometry 113x35+0+0 --cursor-color pink & }
or so. Which is in .bashrc or a file source'd therefrom. (Order of flags may make a difference.)

Hope some help; might prevent nervous breakdown.

Make Eterm open when X starts? This works in my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (but I don't use Enlightenment either):

    Code:
    Eterm -g 100x66-0+20 -L 30000 --term-name Eterm-color --scrollbar false -c gray -O --shade 50 &
    Eterm -g 81x50+155+20 -L 30000 --term-name Eterm-color --scrollbar false -c gray -O --shade 50 &
    exec Eterm -g 12x3+0+0 -L 3000 --term-name Eterm-color -T login --scrollbar false -c gray -O --shade 50
The last one is the one that I end when I want X to shut down (that's why it's exec'ed by xinitrc). The other two are just sort of there.

I suspect that the ampersands are important no matter which WM you're using (though I'm using twm, which is why I have X shut down when the last Eterm goes away). Before the WM starts, though, Eterm might have issues trying to talk to the WM (which only makes sense); this may explain the issues when running it while using Enlightenment. I suspect Enlightenment has its own "run these programs at startup" file somewhere? I suppose you've tried putting the above Eterm stuff into that already?

    What version of enlightenment?

If E17, there's a place in your config menu for setting up programs on start, and on restart, and on shutdown.

In 16, not a clue. Been a long time since I've been there.

The version that comes with Etch official, enlightenment (1:0.16.7.2-5)?? - name of package.

Enlightenment has its own 'remember' faculty which it prefers you to use rather than .xsession or .xinitrc. It is perfectly capable of ignoring selectively what is in .xsession. Have tried fiddling with .Eterm/menu?? and such things - you just get unpredictable results. Particularly with Escreen and transparency.

Point is I have gained the impression, perhaps wrongly, from searches that everybody has problems with this. So just gave up and took the line of least resistance. The above is quick and works well enough.

Don't know if relevant but here's my .xsession:
    Code:
    ! pulseaudio &
    ! enlightenment

Could E17 be used under Etch?

You could always download and build it yourself.

There may be repositories somewhere for it, but I haven't used debian for so long that I don't know where that would be.

Quick google search of "debian e17" came up with this:

Thanks knute. I will try that - though minor miracle if suceed. I'll follow below, sorry lost url.

    EFL User Guide

This is the user guide for non-E17 EFL programs.

    2.2 - Distro specific section
This section contains various distribution related notes and has links to known unofficial package repositories.

    Debian:

There's an unofficial E17/EFL package repository maintained by Blake Barnett (shadoi) for Debian Sid (unstable). See http://shadoi.soulmachine.net for more details. Shadoi is a member of the Enlightenment team, his focus is Debian packaging. If you have any questions regarding the packages, please contact him directly.

If you wish to compile E17/EFL (and a few other EFL based applications) manually under Debian Sid, depending on what you wish to install, you'll most likely need to apt-get some or all of these in order to have an environment where the programs/libraries can be correctly built:

    libtag1c2 libtagc0 libxml2-dev libxml2 cvs autoconf automake1.7 gettext libtool libfreetype6-dev libjpeg62-dev libpng3-dev libtiff4-devlibungif4-dev libbz2-dev libltdl3-dev pkg-config libxine-dev build-essential flex bison sqlite3 libgtk2.0-dev libsqlite3-dev libXxf86vm-dev
We are not 100% sure about this list though, but at one staff member has managed to build all EFL/E17/EFL based applications that are covered in this guide after installing those packages on Ubuntu (which is based on Debian Sid) - some of these dependencies may not be really needed though. If you notice something that should be fixed in that list or perhaps notice that it's missing something, please contact us.

If you wish to compile under Debian Sarge, use the above list of dependencies, and add:

    libxcursor-dev libxrender-dev
