I tried burning the digipup.iso to a dvd and it too will not boot. Here is the error message I got:
    >error, cannot find ** on 'idecd'
    >boot media
    >pupmode=1 pdev1=
    >exited to initial -ramdisk
    >(dev/ram 0) command line
    >(the linux guru can now debug. e3 is available)
    >/bin/sh: can't access tt: job control turned off

That is basically what I get for all cd's

According to this post, the emachines E520 works well with ubuntu linux, perhaps the most popular linux distribution:

    http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/sho...d.php?t=980007

I use ubuntu 8.04 installed on an IBM thinkpad, and it's been very trouble-free (only suspend to RAM sometimes doesn't un-suspend to a GUI, forcing me to kill it and re-login). I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on a Gateway desktop via wubi, and that works very well, also.

I have not checked, but I bet the application you mentioned is available and easily installable in ubuntu using synaptic (a GUI frontend for the wonderful apt-get package management system). Ubuntu is based on Debian, and has over 26,000 packages available for installation.

Check to make sure that your BIOS settings are configured to boot from the CD drive before the hard drive, though it sounds like that might not be the problem. Your CD drive may not be recognized and configured correctly by the linux kernel, but I would not think that would differ for the same knoppix release on the DVD and CD. Make sure that when you burned your CD iso image that you made it as a bootable image, as opposed to just burning it to CD as data.

You may very well be able to install it simply using Knoppix also, as I think they use the same debian package repositories. You should be able to open an application called synaptic somewhere in the menu (probably under administration or system headings). You may need to obtain root privileges to do this (enter su at the command line and supply the root password, or login as root to do this), in ubuntu, you issue the command

    sudo synaptic

at the command line. Then you can click to search for your package by name or subject and install it.

Found this fix on the Fedora forum

    Create a file /etc/modprobe.d/sound

    and put this in
    Code:
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

    Done.

It sounds to me that you are selecting the wrong burning option. You need to specifically "Burn CD (or DVD) iso image". Can you tell use which burner you are using? Here are a couple of guides.

    http://www.wizardskeep.org/mainhall/tutor/neroiso.html
    http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm

The ubuntu Live CD (cheaper) should work just fine to completely configure your system, you can add apps to your hearts content after.

Probably start with a clean download again just to be sure, but if not, make sure you do the md5 sum checks following.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Now, it is important, if your burner does this (sorry, only use K3B it does this automatically) you should verify that the download was successful be compariing the MD5sum your burner displays BEFORE you burn. If it does not match, don't burn it, the download is corrupted.

For the two above, after you select the ISO to burn in your burner, you need to verify that the MD5 sum your burner shows is EXACTLY the right numbers from here.

Were you a Windows expert the VERY first time you looked at a computer with Windows, or did it take a little time.....

I bought the same E520 laptop and am finding it challenging. The "resourse disc" that is included seems to have been copied to the HDD as an ISO image. I have tried to copy and install , Ubuntu, Freespire, DSL, FreeBSD, and that Linpus disc and they will not load.
I am thinking that now is the time to Fdisk or "boot and nuke" and start fresh. I am even considering a windoze install and then going to one of the Ubuntu flavors for keeps. I am currently partial to fluxbuntu, not that it matters. If this is not successful in the next day or so, I will also be returning the hardware, it's just not useful if there is not an OS on there, sad, as I have always been able to put an OS in place on every other piece of hardware I have had... I just poke around and find the answers one way or another ever since Mandrake 8.1.
Anyone , Any thoughts? I would sure like to hear what people are thinking about this situation...
    Thanks for reading...

I can't get anything to load on the machine. I try to install windows XP and the install process poops out after loading up all the necessary information to begin the install process. Has anyone been successful in installing Windows on one of these?

I also picked up one of these laptops, same results. Ubuntu loads but am unable to access the files... I did get Win7 to load and function normally, so I am confident that I can get Ubuntu or Deb on there with little trouble. The Linpus file that is on there appears to be the .iso file direct from a server and not the bootable image, someone just didn't know what to do when installing at the plant...
Nice unit though, quick and clean even with the Win7 on there, having fun with it anyway!

perhaps you would have luck loading a linux distribution unto a cheap usb thumb drive using unetbootin, and then if it works, ok, install from there to the hard drive?

    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Also, if you can install windows, you should be able to install ubuntu to the windows partition using wubi:

    E520 eMachines

I got one of these laptops from www.woot.com and love it! Just go to www.ubuntu.org and download the latest and burn it to CD, and then install it on the laptop to replace Linpus with Ubuntu. It's not Windows.

    It's better.
