    Browsers favour JUSTLINUX site

Hullo , my first post here, well, second, first one just got blitzed, here's a short version. Xubuntu9.10 Gnome 512laptop.

Opera and Firefox between them , whatever I google, or whatever of my 20 Speed Dial tabs I click, gets me to "Cannot connect to remote server", that red and grey page.

EXCEPT my JUSTLINUX Speed Dial tab in Opera. Zoom, straight through.

This is the only site I can go online!

Very curious, any ideas, any Sherlockian deductions out there?

Speed Dial Tabs? I've never heard of bookmarks being referred to that way.

You know the big panels you can put on home page, fill screen with, -in Firefox's case 9 or so pictorial links to sites of your choice. Opera did it first they call it Speed Dial, and you can have 20 or so. Saves a click is all, and they're big targets!
I do so wish someone might make a guess at why I can connect to one website in the universe, and no other??
tho I didn,t think of trying Bookmarks, but will right now.

    No, no bookmarks work.

I booted with Ubuntu 9.04 disk OS, same result. Netconnection shows strong.

I'm thinking that if there's something unique or very unusual about JustLinux setup that enables me to use their website and no other, that might be a clue to what is happening with my OptusWirelessBroadband usb modem, if that's the culprit.
Can't get LQ or Ubuntu forums, so I guess I'm just parked here for a while

What if you enter an ip-adress instead of url?
    Try for instance http://195.178.165.72/
(Well it's in swedish so you won't understand it - but do you reach it?)

Have you tried changing your dns servers?

    The open DNS servers are 208.67.222.222 and 280.67.220.220 and google's one's are 8.8.8.8 and (I think) 8.8.2.2

Thanks X and leonpmu, I will store your posts.
I cleaninstalled 9.04 disk and so lost Opera and my only available website (this one)..but kept my problem. Hence my absence, sorry.
A friend sent me some DNS numbers, but not the ones I see here.
    I messed around for days.
This morning I awoke and decided to take it to The Man and pay$$.
Booted anyway, and glumly opened System/Preferences, and for some reason opened Networx Proxies - not for the first time. But I clicked second tab in there called Ignored Hosts, and 3 items were listed.
One of them was "localhost" which is what this machine was always called till new install called it "laptop".
    I deleted all of them.
And they all lived happily ever after. Seriously, end of issue.

thanks leonpmu, I realised I forgot to mark it solved..

While I'm here, I wonder what could be the reason for being able to access only ONE website, and that one not by searchbar, but only by it being one of my pre-set homepage links in opera.
JustLinux was my most recently set SpeedDial links, and possibly had not been used before the trouble began, whatever that may mean.
I am curious, but my IT knowledge is too shallow to go any further than curiosity. Just seems interesting.

more than likely that was the only one that was cached correctly ie with the right ip address etc, at least it was a good one

Logically, Captain, that would mean that the effect of the incorrect cache-ing of ip addresses of the others was overcome by my deleting my machine name from Ignored Hosts list.
And yes it sure was a good site to be marooned on, way more helpful than Yahoo Gossip of the Day
