Look like the hard disk is on its way out.
When a corruption starts it takes longer to read/write, then delays, then disk refuses to mount and finally cannot be read (failed to register in the Bios).
However a poor connection can also cause difficulty in accessing the disk.
Time to try a different cable and then a different operating system. If the data is valuable the content should be cloned now using dd which copies the data at a hardware level without the need of knowing/using its filing system (sector-by-sector copying the binary bits). dd will not work if the hardware cannot be found from the Bios.

Switched off the USB external enclosure and then switched it on again
The USB external enclosure was connected automatically. However some newly saved files and directory have been deleted.
Is there anyway to recover them?
Besides:
This USB external enclosure and HD (Seagate SATA 640G) have been used for sometime. I'm prepared replacing it with either an Exteral HD or NAS (1TB). It is for home use. Which device would you recommended?
TIA

For deleted files recovery have a look at the Trash folder.

This really depends on its usage and the capability of the equipment.
For example if the access is infrequent and a large volume of data needed to be moved then buying a USB3 adpator and a USB3 enclosure will give you the fastest data transfer time especially if the NAS has a slow speed in hard disk read/write.
However if you need the data in a small amouint frequently, like playing Mp3 music, then put it on a NAS is more convenient.
Only you can tell what would be the best arrangement.

I can't discover them there.

"However if you need the data in a small amouint frequently..." That is what I need
Actually the USB external enclosure is for temporary storage only. I have 2 PCs connected via router, not running at the same time.
- working on PC-1
I'll save the working files on PC-1 with copies to the USB external enclosure
- working on PC-2
Download the files on the USB external enclosure. After working save the files on PC-2 with copies to USB external enclosure.
and so on. In this arrangement I retain the complete data on both PC-1 and PC-2
I'm considering leaving out the USB external enclosure, saving the files direct PC to PC. I'll turn on another PC when saving files.
Any suggestion? TIA

Go NAS. Put a master copy there. Every copy of the same file you have on the PC can be ditched and regarded temporary. Back up only the master copy of NAS which can be switched on whenever you need.
