Question buntu: "No root file system is defined" & Win XP: "..no HDDs found.."

NOTHING on my HDD. I wanted to create MBR for Win XP, followed by installing Ubuntu. But I do not know how to create MBR from USB flash drive containing assorted Ux & rescue tools. Terminal commands seem overly complicated - thought the FDISK would work, (but only for Ux?).
Ideal is Win XP & Ubuntu; otherwise just Ubuntu.
    Any advice appreciated.

If the XP installer can not find the hard drive then make sure it is enabled in the BIOS. If your are uncomfortable with using command line tools then the following guide should be helpful. Install XP first which should automatically create the MBR, then Ubuntu as below. Since this is a fresh install using the automatic approach should not damage anything.
