Why do people insist on saying "GNU/Linux" instead of just "Linux"?

It's embarrassing to admit, but I've never quite understood the distinction between "GNU/Linux" and "Linux".

My understanding is that Linux includes lots of low level utilities (like ls, tail, nano etc) which are from GNU.

But why does that mean I shouldn't call it just "Linux"?

A car includes an engine, and it can't work without an engine, and the work of the engine designers is important. However no one says "I drove an engine/car to work today".
