EXTREMELY DANGEROUS Executable Word File!..

When you click on a Word File to open it, and it doesn't open, instead a small pop-up asks you what you do want to open this file with.. That means it's an executable, probably some powerful Malware.. Right click properties on the file and check its permissions.. If it's checked 'Executable' delete the file immediately.. It's a malware attack, which could corrupt all your word files, and probably destroy the operating system, and maybe everything saved in home file, including all your pictures... Then check all your backups for that file, and delete it from everything..

hmmmmm. If you don't have MS Word installed, you'd get the same message-> "what you do want to open this file with" when you try to open a DOC file.

In my 100-machines word files open with: FocusWriter, LibreWriter, or Text Editor, usually Text Editor.. I don't have MS Word installed in anything except the windows notebook if I haven't' already uninstalled it, this windows crap used exclusively for configuring iPhones and iPods for music playing, and for running defender on the odd flash drive.. I wouldn't trust anything microsoft, not in the slightest!.. As far as I'm concerned microsoft is a major part of 'hell on earth'...

I just edited permissions for a text word file to Executable in Linux Mint Mate 20.3, then clicked to open it, and got this pop-up.. (see attached pix)..

My advice to everyone is if you see this pop-up when trying to open a word file, delete it immediately without opening it, or let your computer suffer the consequences of malware infection..

Your conclusion is a bit misleading. Mint automatically installs libreoffice. If I set a real doc file to executable it still automatically opens in libreoffice. If I create an text file with an unknown extension I do see the popup but it shows a text file like your screenshot.

Obviously a file can be named anything and contain malware. The obvious solution is never open or run an unknown file.

Good plan, but it's a problem when the user has 35,000 word files (notes).. I didn't set a doc. file to executable, I set a text file to executable.. I'm not having any problems with doc. files, only with text and abw files..This delete the executive positive files method works for me when I'm searching in archived notes in finding old notes, editing, sorting, filing, and happen to stumble upon an old word file that makes the pop-up show.. Instead of it opening the word file.. Immediately I check the file's permissions, then delete it, and put it on a list of files to delete from my many notebooks and backups...

I have a way to save a copy of a corrupt (executable) word file that's been changed to code.. I save it to a flash, then upload it to a disposable utility notebook's OS to copy the words and save them in a different format, then put it back into my folders if it proves to be clean after testing it in a utility windows notebook with defender, or with a trusted online malware checker service...

I suppose 'executable' is generally what hacker bullies prefer to use in bullying their targets.. At least I've got that angle covered... Do you happen to know of other ways a note file can be corrupted with malware, without it being made executable..? Any ideas how many ways can malware get into the OS via word files..? Can the active malware infect the OS if the file isn't executable..? Can malware be in the words content..? The way I'm doing things it seems to be safe and secure, but I still must reinstall the OS every month.. Not a problem because it only takes 1.5 hours...

It sort of seems like your word files are more plain text then actual MS word documents. It does seem odd that they are executable but could be for other reasons other then malware. As posted one fault for seeing the popup is the file is unrecognizable because it does not contain a magic number or a standard extension.

My word files are mostly text now, some odt. some rft, some abw.. It's mostly the abw.'s that got corrupted years ago.. Mostly the hackers targeted all my password files, and serious activism notes, turning them all into code... Only a few old files are corrupt, but they are trojan-viruses, when I open a corrupted abw. file it spreads throughout the whole OS and folder, reformatting all abw. files and doc. files into code.. It destroys the OS... I can manually sift through the code to restore the message, but that's lot of work.. Now I must search through 20 isolated archived folders of 17000 word files to locate the few corrupt word files, and delete them, but it would be nice if I could simply restore them.. Maybe next year..? Maybe never..? My relative acquires all my electronics anyway after I jettison my body, (hundreds of computers, two hundred hard drives, 150 phones, 100 tablets, pounds of ram chips, and lots more)).. He will probably grind it all up, and melt it all in his precious metals recycling hobby...

They can't guess my passwords.. No one can.. A password is like: 'KratAHadromagoldtflitzDerblopt..', just a long string of made-up silliness, like religion is made-up silliness.. They managed to corrupt several word files.. Their malware could spread through hundreds of word files in a flash till I stopped using Abiword.. They managed to malware infect a thousand mp3 files in a file of 6000 tunes, changing them into text files.. I didn't lose anything.. I deleted the wrecked tunes, then replaced them from a backup... What type of malware changes mp3's into text files..? What's it called..? Can that malware be reversed..? They managed to malware infect a pictures file, which killed four hard drives OS's and three backup external hard drives.. Not a problem: I simply formatted the damaged drives clean five times two ways, and uploaded the clean files from any one of my 150 backups, and now I check downloaded pix properties before I open them or add them to backups... I didn't so much as loose a pixel from their attacks, I never do.. I have many backups... They won't give me peace, so in the end I won't allow them peace.. Fare is fare, 'eye for eye' works for me.. Torment my life, then I won't help them out of their future torment.. Their future torment is gonna be one Hell of a lot Worse than what they did to my earthly life.. Wouldn't want to be them!..

Now they haven't gotten into the netbook's OS since at first boot now I always immediately uninstall: Warpinator, Thunderbird, Web Apps, HexChat, Transmission, Bluetooth, Hypnotix, Firefox, UFU.. Now my files don't get malware corrupted, not in the slightest, until I open corrupt archived files, and nothing tampers in the OS, except it seems something from goofle or youblob slows-down the OS just a little bit in time (3-weeks).. Do you allow remote access to your systems? Do you allow port forwarding in your router. Are you running ssh? Is so then login attempts as posted are "expected" now days. Running a VPN server for remote access is basically invisible.

abiword does not have embedded macro capability so it would be difficult for any trojan virus to run in an abw file as far as I know. With RTF and MS Word files it is possible but since VBA is not compatible with libreoffice it would be difficult for an embedded virus to corrupt a linux distribution and a since normal user does not have permissions to write to system directories.

There is a reason you are seeing failed logins from a public ip address.
abiword file format uses xml. I believe you can open the file in a text editor and 9f successful copy the plain text.
It is to difficult to help you with all the nonsense you post.
