Agreed, though I still love KDE3 on my notebook. Up to the most recent stable release of Slackware 13.37, I've still been able to run KDE3.5 from packages in the unsupported repositories. I haven't been able to run them on the Release candidates for Slackware 14, and that's dissapointing, but I still have Slax, and KIARA, my own customized version of Slax. KDE3 is more limited than KDE4, but less perfect, and I love KnewstickerQuote:

Note::In case anybody wants to download KIARA: I keep the web software for continually upgraded, but the base is Slax 6.1.2, which is getting a little bit long in the tooth. Just recently I have turned two MS Windows users into Penguin Heads. Both of Which had repeatedly said they would never even try Linux. Now they won't go back to Windows. One even still finds it hard to believe that Linux is free.
That's odd, I installed Knoppix 7.2 on one of my HD's, during the install it was looking for a FDD(which I do not have on my box). Just wait, it will install, it just takes a while.
After 15 years of bouncing around all the Windows and Linux OS's, and dropping windows like "a hot coal", I found that best of the best is Scientific Linux for a simple solid all around good working super-secure OS.. and after UE 3.4 died, Ultimate Edition 3.4.2 for the best and funnest general media OS.. and DBAN the best tool to prep an OS for future install.. But as far as changing desktop handlers, I still can't get it right.. Seems I make too many changes, that eventually kills the OS, knocking me back to square one.. I wish I could find a list of what not to add to specific distro's.. or a series package of programs that tests to determine if an add-on is compatible with the existing setup...
In refurbishing 100's of old computers, the worst thing I found that people do to computers, is raise dust in cleaning the home while the computer is running.. The fans suck up a lot of that airborne dust, which overheats weakens and destroys computer components very fast.. Many computers were trashed just because of a loose wire connector in the tower.. Most computers trashed had their cooling systems totally plugged up with dust, or the op couldn't figure how to disable the bios PW, or didn't know that a few old bios default settings are incompatible with some newer Linux OS's...
I've been running Linux for over 15 years, you name the Distro and yes I have installed it on one of my putrs. from Noppix, to UE, including Gentoo, and Debian........To date the best I have run LinuxMint, Debian Edition 64 bit., It's Ubuntu without the stupid Unity desktop.
As for running everything..........not reccomended, for instance don't run a kde app in the gnome environment or vise versa.
And I've also ran every Windoze flavor, My Preference is Linux.
But whatever, even the worst Linux is better than the best Windoze.
Just the other day someone asked what KDE, Cinnimon, Mate etc. is, I told them it is simply a desktop environment.

great post, i think the advice to start with a couple of live cd's of various linux distros is the best way to go, that way u test dive without risk as u rightly pointed out. thnx again, will definetly copy this to my linux facebook group

Seems we need a serious cookie firewall between the internet and our computers, a secondary OS in front of the browser.. I'm trying a secondary scrapper computer that's always on and net connected without any security in it, to bait the bullies into attacking that one, not my netbook.. I tried every Linux I could back when Windows 10 and Yosemite for OSX was released. I even dual booted Windows, OSX and a few Linux distros.
I ended up with straight Arch as my choice to actually start. Because I was tired of not knowing what how why. Even though I still didn't know how what or why. I had a great running OS, modded nvidia drivers and sound porting, changed my window managers a few times. So I broke it a lot. But why I fell inlove with Arch. No matter what I was doing. I could fix it.
I recently tried exceptionally hard to do production on Windows 11. But I couldn't bare all the garbage anymore. The horrific way of handling a computer, literally, it is not great at buffering, writes things too many times to too many places for no reason, and it just leaves them there. It broke itself, constantly, and fixing it is nigh impossible in comparison. A lot of the time I really couldn't fix it actually.
Now I do not suggest that anyone does anything like that. But I went through my options.
This time I looked at Distro's as a whole, support etc if any, performance etc. I went with CachyOS and am very happy. First install was flawless, I went with KDE and a simple 80gb root on nvme with btrfs, but btrfs... IMO, is going to destroy my drives with what it does. XFS seems great for me. I can't say that the instructions align exactly with the installs. And I can't say that you can install any DE/WM on their list, because my install had failed. But KDE/GNOME/XFCE worked. LXQT did not. I can't say this will be the same for everyone. Just my experience.
Was impressed when I tried WINE. Ran some crazy complex applications. Failed horribly with simple authentication type of softwares. I kinda like that, even though I paid for those products. heh.

I've tried all the Linux OS's.. I believe the best Linux for a beginner to start with is 'Linux Mint Mate 22.3.. It's fully customizable, clean, quiet, and doesn't fight the user in any way like most OS's do.. It installs in 20-minutes, and can be fully customized in about an hour.. If you know windows you know how to operate this OS, and it's three times more customizable than windows, and it doesn't insult you with goofy petty advertising, insane redirects, engineered exploit holes, spyware, forced updates and upgrades, that gosh awful start up noise, dancing cartoon dogs...
I strongly suggest the novice install this OS, and dig into it after reboot, left and right clicking on everything and anything, changing literally everything in the OS, making all the messes and mistakes, making a big huge mess in a fevered uncontrolled careless rush, not caring in the slightest that you are meticulously destroying the OS.. Have your curious experimental fun, then take a break from the computer.. Then return, reinstall it, and make all the right choices... Dump firefox.. Install Librewolf.. It is absolutely crucial you install the OS encrypting both the installation and home file folder.. Find the first encryption in the forth question check boxes in install.. Click the two encrypt boxes..

UFW is a frontend to netfilter which is part of the kernel. Are you implying the kernel is corrupted and has engineered holes? I believe portmaster also accesses netfilter using nfqueue. There are many linux security people that try to find holes in applications and the linux OS. If that was the case I would expect something would of been found by now.

Given that 'StormVirus' could soon hit the internet, it is absolutely crucial that everyone running a widows OS with their valued data in it, and especially all businesses globally running widows, immediately acquire a secondary computer running Linux to save all their files in.. Or, it is possible to have just one computer with two hard drives.. You install Linux in a spare hard drive, preferably a new solid state hard drive.. Fill it up with all your precious data by transferring all your backup files to it, then switch back to the widows hard drive.. Use the Linux hard drive as your backup system.. When StormVirus hits the internet, destroying millions of widows computers, you'll still have a working Linux OS with a working copy of all your precious data safely stored in it.. Or buy a third SSD HD to use it as your secondary backup by connecting it to the computer with a hard drive USB adapter..

You'll loose nothing from the evil StormVirus war... Then you format the wrecked hard drive, if it will format, and install Linux on it.. But! when Storm hit my three first computers back in W-98 days, the hard drives wouldn't install an OS.. Storm killed the hard drives too.. But these days we have DBAN hard drive formatter.. Maybe DBAN would repair a Storm damaged hard drive..? probably... Everyone who installs OS's should have a CD of DBAN... (Just one very important thing: never ever have an external media connected to the computer's usb slots when running DBAN)..
When Storm hits a computer, instantly the screen fills-up with the antivirus's or firewall's front page till the RAM runs out, thus the 'storm'.. Reboot is the infamous 'blue screen'.. If you are running widows on the internet, make an isolated Linux backup of all your precious files, so you don't loose them to an insane bully's jollies.. Make this week your 'back up my files' week.. Be safe, not sorry...
I sure wouldn't want to lose my precious files.. I have everything in many secure backups since W-95 days to now, even this note.. After I tap the 'submit reply', I'll add this note to the backup hard drive, connected by the usb connector after I disconnect the net... I just clicked up 'new document', and pasted this note into it...

Okie, Now I copy and paste this note, and click submit, then save it in the backup hard drive... This netbook's hard drive could crash and die right now, and I wouldn't care in the slightest.. I wouldn't lose anything I can't replace from backups.. I found a university lab creating Linux.. I barely managed to install it on a hard drive, then emailed them hundreds of new ideas on how to make Linux user friendly, fun, useful, and stable... Linux is built my way from my hundreds of suggestions.. I love Linux.. Linux was like 'a ladder to escape from helldows'.. One suggestion I am proud of was: "Hey guys, howzabout making a real-time visual list of what's happening when the OS is installing and updating.' and "Hey guys can you make the little boxes be the buttons..? and "Hey guys can we have it so picture editors sides can be grabbed by the cursor, and moved inward and outward.', and Hey guys can we have little smiling faces that we can stick in places in letters.", and hundreds more new ideas and suggestions.. I even got into speculating solving internal systems writing problems, and adding systems.. Suddenly Linux was fun and easy...

If the computer operating system is acting-up having silly troubles and glitches it means your OS caught some of the cyber diseases (malware) from the internet.. Save your recent work to a reliable flash drive (not made in china), or to an external hard drive.. Save your bookmarks, and reinstall the operating system fresh.. Now days the internet isn't safe for any OS.. The hacker-maggots can infiltrate and damage any and every OS... Last week the netbook's OS wouldn't save a new note on the desktop, so I transferred the few new files to a backup, and instantly reinstalled the OS... The hacker-maggots like to damage peoples computer word files.. It makes them feel like they are big tough-guy supermen in control of the whole world.. They don't have much control over anything else...Their deranged mummies would be so proud of them...
If you run into a permanent persistent 504, it's probably a virus, maybe reinstall the OS.. Keep in mind that there's a global war going on out there.. The kookoos war is in the internet too...
One thing I accidentally did when the computer was being pestered by a constant 504's is I changed hard drives, and in a half hour put the original hard drive back in, and the 504's vanished.. Maybe if you are bugged by a pest 504, you might try unplugging the notebook and pulling the notebook's battery for a few minutes.. Might do something..? Just guessing...
Make a secondary notebook that's used exclusively for the internet, not used for your treasured private files, editing, and archives.. Only add needed copies of backups to the netbook: pix, vids, notes, music.. copied/uploaded/backuped stuff that doesn't matter in the slightest if you lose any of it.. My crapper netbook has the installation CD always in the slot.. If something bad happens to the OS, I copy my most recent work to a flash drive, CD, or external HD, the three or four new files and a few downloads, push in the CD slot, reboot, and reinstall the OS.. So what if it takes 90-minutes... I have a hundred Linux-loaded notebook hard drives.. Should the netbook's OS get corrupted, out goes the hard drive, and in goes a new one, and I'm back on the Web in 2- minutes. The troubled hard drive goes to the utility desk to the utility notebook to have its OS DBAN'd and reinstalled...
These days it's good policy to check properties permissions before you transfer new items to the back up.. Do so check in properties that it isn't 'executable'.. If a download (pix or video) is executable, immediately delete it without opening it..
It's absolutely crucial you install the OS encrypting the installation and the home file.. If a new Linux installation ISO doesn't have those two encryption features it ain't worth 'a dead blade of grass in the lawn'.. From now on before I test a new Linux OS I'm gonna ask in their forum if the thing can be double encrypted.. If it can't, then I 'll just forget about it.. Won't waste my time downloading it...
