Yes, very true. Yet we're probably still motivated to fold to a big degree because of the reward (i.e. certificate) and competition (e.g. passing Microsoft), two of the most basic mechanisms in psychology to motivate people to get a job done. It keeps us motivated in the short run so we're more likely to meet the big goal in the long run.

Dang... I'm getting tired of seeing my bs_texas at 15 WU's. But, my 3 folding computers are working as hard as they can, I reckon, and should finish their work units soon.

It's interesting how they are all working on different incantations of the folding process.

Machine 3 says: 5,777,000 out of 7,500,000 steps (77%)

Machine 2 says: Finished a frame (262)
(out of 400)

Machine 1 says: Frames Completed: 1750/2500

Yep, that had me wondering, too. :) The first time I saw the "Frames completed:" message I was like "Eesh, how is my 500MHz rig gonna handle so many steps???", yet it didn't seem to be that much slower than the 400 frames WU.

Oh, and we're in the top200 now and have also passed the Cisco Team. :D

I just finished my first one too! And I think it was rather big! (7500 frames as opposed to the 250 frames it's working on right now...)

Only really disappointing thing is that I have to fold in Windows cause there's no 64-bit client and I w't go near anything that's 32-bit...

125000 frames?! How many procs do you have? Cause 7500 frames took my single proc like two whole days to complete using the whole 2.2 GHz... That would mean that if you did anything with those procs at the same time, you're looking at well over... 20 days?

Can that be right? I just finished up a 250 frame one and I have a 125 frame one. 125000 seems like an incredible lot... I'm just thinking that if I am ever given so many frames I'll uninstall the program cause my proc would run too hot too long (it's a laptop with an AMD 64) :D

It's 125000 steps which is different... I also just started one with 125000 steps, but it'll be done tomorrow morning (in about 7 hours). It's confusing trying to find out the sizes of these things... They give 12 days for my current one (125000 steps of 125 frames) and they gave 32 days for the one before (7500000 steps 7500 frames). go figure :D

Every project is different...if you'll notice, sometimes the job runs using tinker, other times gromacs. These are tools for molecular dynamics.
To answer your question about why do we care about protein folding...
Remeber a few years ago when the human genome was sequenced? Well that's all fine and good, we can tell the ORDER in which amino acids are incorporated into proteins, but we still don't have a basic set of rules to predict what the STRUCTURE will be. And STRUCTURE == FUNCTION.

Yeah, but my workstation is chewing on a 5'000 frame WU for quite a while already. With a 500MHz proc, that doesn't really make me look like still contribute anything. :(

I have a question. I have a really sucky dial-up. Can I still fold some or does it work better with broadband? I am connected a lot at night. I can connect during the day if needed. If it doesn't take to long to download whatever it is processing.

I do have a genetic disorder and am disabled from it. I sure would like them to start finding cures for some of this crap even if it is to late to do me any good.

You can set your config file for folding in a way that it only works WU that are maximally 5MB big - I guess your dialup would still be able to handle that. :)

Actually, you have to tell it to accept WU's larger then 5MB. Default is to grab the small work units.

Grr. I guessed it would happen, because many of the computers in my house are turned off during the summer, on account of the heat. I'll catch back up when the summer is over, I think.

(hehe... ok, it's not a competition, but it is nice to see a little movement along the way. The difference is, for me, I added my slackware machine with the P-III 866Mhz processor into the mix.)

Well, I have learned one thing while doing this. It is like watching dormant grass grow. I am up to 33 frames so far. There were times when I thought it was locked up or in a loop or something. I started to kill it.

I guess it is working it is just slow. They need something to make it, god I hate to say this, 'pretty'. You know, something like a moving meter or graph or something.

I just noticed this thread actually and was wondering if I can join this team now?

I setup the folding process as a service with the "folder" user, and noticed that I'm almost finished with my first file now after about 3 weeks.


Can I set a team number in the config file or would I need to start over?

just run FAH502-Linux -config and it will ask you questions, like which team you are on.

Unless youare using Windows, then launch the GUI app and put in your team.

Well, I'm gonna hafta get outta the folding business for a while. Just got my latest electric bill. $226 (That's a sizeable percentage of my entire current net worth.)

And I reckon that's mostly from the A/C running to keep the computer room cool. Not to mention this is Texas and it's summer and it's hot. So, I am only going to have one running PC at a time for a while and I'm turning that off every night.

I've had 3 interviews recently. Hopefully something will come open soon.

I havn't folded in a while because of work...rendering video takes a lot of processing power, specially 2 hr avi's, anywho i just checked the ranks and i'm still 23, thats amazing givin how hard it was to keep 19th...heh I could fold one wu and probaly last the rest of the year at 23 :)...I may start back up here shortly when classes start backup. By then I should have app. 5 comps with a min of 1 ghz and 500mhz fsb :)

From what I ahve seen on my Linux box, it has such a low priority that it won't affect anything else running. I know when I am compiling or something like that, the folding moves way down the list of time on the CPU.

If you are running windoze, which it sounds like you are, then I don't know how that works. You may need to cut it off while you really need the horsepower so to speak.

Me, I just let it run, and run and run. I hope they find a cure for something.

Ironically for me the windows version set to use 100% of the cpu (amd 1.0 ghz sempron 1gb 3200 ram) gave me less lag than the linux version running on a an 64bit amd athalon (2ghz i believe), 64bit mdk os and 1gb 3200 ram. I had problems with my php website rendering quickly and access files through samba.

I did read somewhere that windoze does suck up the CPU but since I don't have windoze I can't swear to it. Maybe Linux is just better at setting priorities. I know it is better at everything else. :D That's why I don't use windoze.

I did get a email from Bell South today. I was griping about there slow as syrup on the north pole their server is. They did at least admit that Linux is more secure and makes a better server. For some reason though they think a Linux server can't serve data to a windoze rig. I'm not sure where the heck that came from. I plan to straighten that out pretty soon.

Definitely something wrong there. Windows is notoriously bad at true multi-tasking so you should definitely be getting better results from Linux. I frequently will start up a game of UT or do video encoding while Folding is running and it always steps nicely out of the way when something else needs to use the processor. I wonder if your servers might be running at a low priority or something. I don't know why it would be set up that way, but it's the only thing I can think of.

Just joined the team Friday morning. :) I already completed my first WU and have started onto the second. I checked the team page and I am now listed and I'm not even at the bottom! It's cool to be helping out a great cause. I'm running this on a Duron 950 with 512 MB of RAM so I was surprised that it had finished a WU by this afternoon (Sunday).

I think some of the ones on the bottom, below you and me, are not folding any more. I went up a good ways the other day when I started.

I did have to shut my rigs down early this AM. That sorry low down hurricane Dennis put out my lights. My UPS can not last 12 hours. My generator wouldn't crank. :mad: I'll beat on it some more later. I started the torture a while ago but I got tired. :eek:

Well, you could also move to a country without hurricanes. Overhere, our mountains shield us from bad weather - and burry you in avalanches and mud slides instead. :D

I don't think it matters where you live. It is always something that can happen. We usually have straight line winds and maybe a tornado or two. We had three a couple years ago. Wiped out most of a local town. I also live close to a river. It does flood on occasion but not in a long time. Thet took out some of the kinks so it would go faster. Then put in a dam to slow it down. < scratches head >

I guess I could move to CA then worry about earthquakes and such, NOT. Me to chicken.

I hear you have a pretty country though. I have seen it on TV which likely doesn't do it justice. I'm not moving though. lol
