Hello,
I'm starting a new Linux Distribution based on Red Hat Linux 8.0
Anybody, care to try? See http://LinuxInstall.org
Sorry I can only offer them by CD-ROM since I don't have enough bandwidth to post ISO image.

Ah, should have tried a debian based install. Take debian, leave it the way it is, just add an easy installer, and you're in the money! Other distros are based on debian, but they add their own entrapments. There's no "free"* commercial debian distro, which is a shame.
* (by free, I mean one that's debian, aside from the installer, and one that allows experienced users to decide whether they want to support the distro or not. Adding proprietary extras to debian isn't really what I mean. What I'm looking for, and beleive will succeed better than the other distros, is one that is essentially deb/testing, with a simple install. Users may pay for an upgrade to support the distro, but they can get updates from apt, if they want, without hassle. While this may seem to contradict normal business psychology, in cases such as the conversion from 2.0-2.2 kernels(major upgrades), many users will opt for the easier route of a reinstall.)
Hello All,

Wow! It never crossed my mind an individual could assemble his/her own distro!:D
I know you could write your own code, and contribute to the free software movement, but a whole distro all on your own? hehe..
Must be well-versed in C, C++ and all I guess :)
LinuxInstall.org 2.0 has been released. What's new?
"New Kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0; new security updates (total 26 including the new Kernel); new Mozilla 1.2.1; new Evolution 1.2.2; extra bonus software - complete set of Red Hat 8.0 manual documents in HTML, Acrobat Reader 5.06 with Mozilla plugin, Real Player 8.0 with Mozilla plugin, Flash Player 6.0 r69 with Mozilla plugin and more."

Looks like RedHat 8.0 with a different icon. The icon needs work btw, it just doesn't go with the rest of the desktop.
I agree. I'm not a graphic designer but I wish I could create a nice transparent icon for the logo. Do you know how? If anyone has a better looking logo idea for my distro, please email me. I'll consider it for next release.

Send me your icon. I'll see what I can do.Quote:

Where is the source code for everything... that you are required to reveal?
Once again, my distro is based on Red Hat Linux 8.0, if you have Red Hat Linux 8.0 Binary CD and Source CD, you already have 90% of sources of my distro. For other 9%, you will find them at mozilla.org and ximian.com. There is 1% which is non-open source but they free.
1) 90%

2) 9%
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/re...RPMS/xft/SRPMS
ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-evol...80-i386/source
3) 1%

from GNU GPL:
3. You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based on it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:
a) Accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or,
b) Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or,
c) Accompany it with the information you received as to the offer to distribute corresponding source code. (This alternative is allowed only for noncommercial distribution and only if you received the program in object code or executable form with such an offer, in accord with Subsection b above.)
Also, $10 us dollars seems more than enough for the cost of a cd and postage.
You sounds like a lawyer. So providing URL where source can be download from isn't enough for you? What specifically do you want me to do?
Thomas
ps. Did I mention email support is included in that price? Also replacement CD in case it was lost or damaged during shipment. (That happened a few times already)
It doesn't matter what I want you to do. If you are using GPL code, and redistributing it for a fee, you really need to read and understand what your responsibilities are according to the GPL, otherwise, the GPL is worthless.
