Make sure when you do what Hayl said above that you run synaptic as the root user. Also since synaptic is a graphical utility you will need to be in KDE or some type of X session to run it.

Yea, just get rdesktop for the linux side and turn on Remote Desktop on the XP side. Normally you just have to type
rdesktop ip of the windows box
