Is it just the cd? Can you play an mp3 with xmms?
If you can play files but not a cd then the cd output could be muted, unmute it from a mixer program such as kmix.

You can play fragmented divx by fixing the index with divfix, just do a google for the prog and you will find it.

When you boot from the cd, at the first screen type 'linux mediacheck' at the command prompt.
This will check your cds one by one and will report if they are burned properly or have errors.

hdd5 is correct. Because in windows all the visible partitions except C are logical. So this is the first logical partition on the secondary slave.

AFAIK sndconfig is not installed by default in RH9. You will have to manually install it by using add/remove programs.
