I think I have this getting worked out. Somehow I was using xdm, and it was hanging. I removed that with: rc-update -d xdm
Now the machine boots to a console logon, and if I type startx, it runs...

I did get it running.... but then I rebooted!

Now, it goes all through the boot, and then when it gets to the terminal logon, X starts. Then I get a black screen with an X for my mouse pointer,...

I think I am crawling my way out of the newbie hole!!

I ran x86cfg, and made some basic display setting changes, and the thing ran when I tried startx!!
