mdwatts's reply is meatier than mine, but when I started out in Linux I couldn't get my modem to work at ALL. In the end, what sorted it out was pointing directly to the com port it uses (/dev/ttys0)...

Hmm. I always thought it was as simple as exporting X to a network address, but I've only ever done this once, years ago.

    I think you're right.
The fact that stuff is in /usr/share means that most everyone can at least read it. Gnome just have their own folder inside of /usr/share. Cos they're special :D

    Hi there

Your problem sounds most definitely to do with permissions on the /home partition. There are two places where you may want to check this out.

First, from the command prompt, type: cd /...

Thanks! I'll dig around in the modules and see what comes up. I don't want to kill things in the BIOS because I still need the card to work when I boot back to M$.

    Thanks for your input.

    Hi

    Thanks for the advice.

Recompiling the nVidia driver with the Phase22 in place certainly sorted out the problem, and I'm now running dual screen again just fine. Yay!

    Disabling hardware to avoid clashes

    Hi all
I run a dual-boot system with M$ (which I use for Fruity Loops) and Mandrake 10 (which I use for everything else). We all have that one killer app ... *sigh*
    Now, I recently acquired a...

Thanks for your feedback. If I understand you correctly, simply running a process as root while connected to the internet isn't in itself enough to make me vulnerable - or at least no more or less so...

If you're using K3B to burn CDs (great app!), this has features to allow non-root users to burn. Alternatively, you could create a user group called "burn" or something equally appropriate, and give...
  12. Java sneakiness - how portable is Webstart?

    Hi
So, at work we use a tool for developing content, that our client wrote. It's in Java, launched from WebStart. Recently a colleague showed me how to take it home, which is a boon because I don't...

    Processes - security question

    I have a question.
I use linux at home. Let's say I'm logged in as "a_user", with normal privileges.

While logged in, I need to execute something as root, so I enter my root password. I am...

    He's right, that should work.
The reason for it is that Linux does not allow spaces in pathnames or filenames. Well, actually it does, but you need to enclose the things with spaces in paretheses to...

Like the man says, try the google.

But otherwise, there are two standard ways. The P4 1.6A overclocks better than the vanilla 1.6, I forget why. Essentially because the 1.6A generates less heat,...

    Hi there

Well yeah. I don't have an FX 5600, but it works pretty well on my Ti4200. There isn't any reason that it shouldn't work with the FX5600, tho.
Personally I don't plan to upgrade until...
