WinXP uses NTFS rather than FAT32 filesystems.
There is experimental read/write for NTFS, but it is inadvisable to use it as it can destroy your Windows XP installation.

Mandrake has rescue. Put in the first install cd and read the prompts. Check out their rescue proceedure. Check the user site docs.

I haven't tried it as I installed over a 56 k connection, but you can get some cheap Gentoo CDs. The Gentoo Essentials and an install CD looks as if it would do the trick.

If you have the live cd, when you boot with it and type pci-setup, it probably will tell you the module it uses. You used a live CD to install, I presume?

1. Did you create a /boot partition and do you know what /dev/hd<XX> it is? If so, you didn't edit the entry for your /boot partition as it is still listed as /dev/BOOT as shown by the error message....

Remember to mount your /boot partition before you copy your kernel as /boot isn't mounted after booting.

If you want a gui pointy-clicky thingy install xcdroast. It all comes standard with all distros except maybe for some floppy ones.
