the -a flag shows all interfaces, even the ones that are down.

I can't bring it up myself because ifconfig doesn't see it, i.e. ifconfig -a only lists a lo device.

rpmbuild --rebuild file.src.rpm

Then install the new rpm
rpm -ivh file.rpm

This is the way that i started off, and its really easy to do. Put the new hd in as the slave, run the redhat install and it should be all good.
