I recently installed Debian stable net install on my (old) Compaq Presario 1635.
I downloaded and installed all the "neseccary" base system files and excluded any others.
All fine up to...

I started with Mandrake...
But after being told about Debian, I havent gone back!
I love the way it updates EVERYTHING. Apart from stable to unstable, which for me, ended up as a disastrous display...

A very good hack I found: if you want high res, boot knoppix, copy /etc/X11/XF86Config to your local hard drive /etc/X11.

If knoppix booted in 1024x786 (eg.) you will have that on your local...

Yeah, QTParted is a kick arse program.
I use kanotix for my system recovery things...
and RIP for partimage ;)

Lilo is poor, easy to hack and unstable.
