well Ive been using gentoo for around 2 weeks now I started from stage2, and so far I love it, Ive used slackware mandrake and redhat in the past and I cant see myself ever using anything else.

edit or make ~/.xinitrc then add anything you want to startup like this:

exec gkrellm2 &
exec xmms &
exec fluxbox

just an example of how I do it. I created ~/.xinitrc and put in it

exec gkrellm2 &
exec fluxter -w &
exec fluxbox

I didnt have a ~/.xinitrc file and i was booting to gnome and wanted to boot to fluxbox so I created a .xinitrc file in my /home/myname/ and put in it:

exec fluxbox

I use redhat 8 and I want to skip the gui logon and boot into fluxbox.

I changed to init 3 from 5 but when i startx it boots straight into gnome.

where can I change startx to boot into fluxbox...

you need to get open gl working, I got mine working by download and installing drivers for my gforce3 ti 200 from nvidia.
