Excellent, thanks very much je_fro! Switching to the x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.2 gcc and trying the merge again worked without fail. But now should I keep using 4.1.2 or should I revert back to 3.4.6?

actually i just walked away from it for a while, came back and tried my normal stuff again. after setting ath0 up with ifconfig and iwconfig again, /etc/init.d/net.ath0 restart brought ath0 back up...

anything with an atheros chipset is pretty much good with the madwifi module (www.madwifi.org). Personally I was looking at the netgear 511T, which I'm sure would work as well as my current 311T..

are you really using WPA and WEP (didn't know that was done)? You may want to also post wireless.conf if editing it above doesn't help. more good luck!
