I'm not sure but i think if you want to run the current alsa then you need to have the current kernel installed. Slack 10 comes with 2.4.x and the current alsa needs 2.6.x.

You could maybe try running 'mouseconfig' as root from the command line. That would give you a choice of mice to use, PS/2, USB etc. That is what i use in Slackware, not sure if there is another way...
