two things:
first: src rpms and source are not the same things.
the normal steps to install a src rpm:
- rpm -ivh <package>.src.rpm

thanks, but i found my answer. the culprit was compiz. i got rid of it and video playback performance was back up to snuff.
it's too bad because i've used compiz on fedora 7 & 8 and ubuntu...
