A new forum - Feat. F.A.Q.'s, archived good posts, running discussions,

From a newb's perspective on the forums, I have some ideas that could help the forum & people, myself and all the other newbies, and the linux world

How about making one forum in which every one should read before posting.

    This forum will have:
    - all the stickies
~ how to post q's on the forums,
    ~ forum etiquette & rules
~ how to search for previous answers [ though that last one may not be used as much, if the proposed forum is opened]
    - good archived posts that answer common q's like "kazaa\p2p on linux,"
"Linux on x-box\psx"; "dvds on linux" and many, many more.
    - a list of good linux sites !!!!!!
[many newbs dont know of that many good sites other than this]
    - Any other historical, humorous, or memorable posts.

"The Tech support greatest hits" at the winamp forums are a good example of what I am proposing.

As well, I noticed that the "Community Posting Guidelines" are only sticky in the some of the forums [not dev\random, i know, maybe others]
this and any other sticky prob could end with my proposal.

As well, tell the new registrees to read that forum before posting !!!!!!!!

    Thanks & regards,
    keyshawn

That is a good idea though some are already covered in the JL Community Help Posting Guidelines such as a link to the 'How to ask questions the smart way', search first suggestion etc. and we have the "How I did it' forum for members to post their own how-to's/tutorials/guides.

Lets see what the others have to say.

Now if only we could figure out a way to 'force' the members to read the Posting Guidelines.

I would have to second mdwatts' thoughts on the issue.

If people read the Community Help Posting Guidelines, the Help File Library and the How I Did It! Forum, I think that would do the trick right there.

At least, maybe we could write some Javascript code into the forum registration that made you sit and wait 30 seconds on the "Community Help Posting Guidelines" page before pressing an "Accept!" button to become a member.
Registered Linux user #230403! Since March 2001! YAY.

Try doing a forum search or a google search before asking a question. And please don't use HELP! in the topic of your post... it's so lame... Please don't PM me for help-- post a question in the forum instead.

Great idea Alex if it is possible.

Would you mind posting it in the Moderator forum for Brian to see? Thanks as you should get the credit (and bonus) for your idea.

how about a forum, for people who choose not to search and rtfm? that way, those regulars wont be annoyed at recurring posts, and the fine people who wants to help can do so.

I like the idea of a new forum... isn't there a php function that will force the page to stay open for so long? If so, then if they close before hand, posting will be locked?

    A new forum titled

"Use this forum if you are too lazy to RTFM or search"

    ???

    Sounds like a plan.

you should have a ranking system....

everytime someone (cough cough me cough cough) doesn't seach before asking or doing something stupid in the forum, you could take away a point or something. Then people look at this and see if that user is helpful or just annoying

We did have a ranking system in one of the previous versions of vBulletin. Either it was removed by the vBulletin people or by the JL owners.

But then members were being 'ranked' for their personal views posted in off topic/rants (now /dev/random). Of course that was not a fair rating.
