    Stuck at redhat splash screen?

Alright I have a problem. I believe this happened when I recompiled the redhat 8 kernel to 2.4.21.. It happens when i boot up through the old or the new kernel though, so i could definitely be wrong here...

The log in screen comes up fine.. I type the user and pass word and the redhat splash comes up.. But it gets stuck there before any of the icons show up (the little network icons and what not)

I don't even know how to begin on this one.. Any suggestion on any logs to look through, anything to help??

Once in a while when i reset the computer and it checks the filesystem. I get fixed inode errors and then X boots up..

can you boot into command line OK ?
ctrl+alt+F1 should get you to command login from graphic login.
If so check your logs, /var/log/messages
